Re: “T Q&A

I love Kaitlin's comment that one does not have to be a born artist and that everyone needs art and can do art. A reminder to tap into a new reserve - thanks for that K.

3.24.11 Mari, I've always appreciated you as both a good soul and writer. Jeffrey Scott Brown has my vote and I hope I can interest some of my colleagues here in the N.E. to read your story on the courage and hope Jeffrey Scott Brown inspires. p.s. I, being guilty too of being a tad emotional at times and have really not endured Jeffrey's sufferings so remind Jeffrey in the adage: "Progress not Perfection" sonny charles urbine aka charlie bass.

Re: “T Q&A

Fantastic for downtown. I hope that the Buffalo Exchange Congress Street shop proves itself to be a smart business move (as well as an emotional decision!) for Kerstin and Spencer. Will look forward to more shopping!

Re: “T Q&A

A friend of mine wrote "I love you" on Facebook. I am guessing it is aimed at the world. How cool is that?!! No qualifiers, no filtering out those that "shouldn't" be loved. I like that idea. I hope it will be tolerated.

Re: “Homeless Helper

I have had the privelige to volunteer with my husband while on vacation in Tucson. This is an excellent model for what we could all do.

You tell 'em, David! The two-party establishment cartel is a colossal failure, and is bankrupting the U.S. in a hurry. Time to wake up and vote Libertarian!

Re: “T Q&A

Charlie couldn't begin to explain the importance of this project in one article! :-)

Tucson has had a long love affair with drive-in theaters starting in 1940 when the RCA Corporation built the first one where the Southgate Shopping Center is now. That one only survived for two years due to WWII shortages.

The next one was the Midway at 4500 E Speedway where the Midway business complex is now. Built in 1948, it survived until about 1976.

The Rodeo, Apache, 22nd Street, Prince, Cactus, Miracle Mile, Tucson 4 then 5 all followed through the years. The DeAnza people tripled the Apache and DeAnza in 1977 then added a fourth screen to the DeAnza in 1978 in response to the Syufy Corporation adding a fifth screen to the Tucson 4.

From 1978 until 1984, Tucson has twelve drive-in screens where they could see Hollywood's finest from the comfort of their own car.

So why did the DeAnza 4 close last year? Only the DeAnza people can explain as they still own four other drive-ins, two in California, one in Utah, and one in Atlanta GA.

Those drive-ins have web sites, were heavily promoted and do very well. At least one of them is only open from Spring until Fall. Yet Tucson with a metropolitan area of nearly one million people had no web site, no promotion, very little maintenance and was sold when the opportunity arose.

If you came to the last night on October 3, 2009, you probably saw that it was wall to wall and at 10 PM, hundreds of cars were still trying to get in for the last show. Had they cared about Tucson and done a little promotion and maintenance, they could have had many weekends like that.

My wife an I went nearly every weekend for at least the last 12 years and saw many of the same young families with children every weekend. There is something special about seeing a movie under the skies in Tucson that can't be replicated at any indoor. With admission prices like $6 for adults and children under 12 for $1, most young families could take their family out for an evening of entertainment with a double feature for under $20. $20 won't even get you admission and popcorn and a soda at any indoor for *ONE* feature.

This project is important for Tucson because it will restore some of the charm that made Tucson so unique. It will also give young families a venue for entertainments that is sadly lacking in Tucson.

Many of the 400 or so remaining drive-in theaters are family owned and do very well. Some of them report that they do over $50,000 worth of business in a month. This is a unique opportunity for a small group to define what makes Tucson such a great place to live and also make a profit.

Charlie was too modest to mention that I have the main screen stored on property that I bought for that purpose and have also purchased two complete sets of projection equipment and FM sound transmitters. I wish I could do more but I'm just a retiree and can't afford to do much more to support the project.

My daughter, singer Maya Caballero, who performs in Tucson often, is descended from Alvarez' and I wonder if she might be any relation.I notice a slight resemblance to Mirabel Alvarez.Hopefully, one day I will be in town to go to the festival! It sounds great.

I always look forward to Tucson Meet yourself- it's held the start of our good weather and outdoor time in town, and it's a great way to connect with our eclectic community- I'd love to see it develop into something similar to Santa Fe's international Folk Art festival-

Re: “T Q&A

I attended Tucson Meet Yourself for years when I was a tourist. Some of the folk artists have been demonstrating at the Festival more than 20 years. So many traditions, so many cultures (and so much great food). I love what happens downtown when the Festival is underway.

Re: “T Q&A

Congrats Libby on continuing your stewardship of the UofA landscape. It was a wonderful time during the elimination of flood irrigation and the introduction of effluent and computerized irrigation control on campus. I have fond memories of working with you in the early years of the transformation to a more appropriate arid, desert palette. Continue the great work that will be enjoyed by thousands for years to come!
