"Black Like Me" is still heads & shoulders above the rest.

Re: “TUSD, Community Food Bank & Local Farmers Partner to Bring More Fresh Produce to Schools

Raytheon parents are smart enough, and earn enough that they don't send their kids to public schools. Maybe ask bus drivers.

Many engineers come and go from places other than AZ. H1Vs have been promoted in lieu of Americans once again.

And Tucson has been a liberal democrat mecca for decades, imagine that.

5th poorest city in America, and damn proud of it.

Re: “TUSD, Community Food Bank & Local Farmers Partner to Bring More Fresh Produce to Schools

Oh, and you don't attract quality industry by defunding our schools, no matter how much you hate the school board, and even if they might deserve some/all of it. Just ask they Raytheon parents what they think of cutting our schools, somehow, I don't think they are feeling very 'attracted' to AZ right now, even if management could care less, and I've seen R's management come out strongly in support of our schools and universities...or did you just want all their employees to be H1B's???

Re: “University of Arizona Joins Forces with Uber for Research on Driverless Cars

I am not sure what kind of research is going to be funded with the small amount of 25k but it's pretty clear Uber did just get a great deal on exposure. To get news articles and press releases published in papers, aired on TV news and spread all over the internet for only 25k? That is called a marketing coup. I know I am being cynical but I am curious as to how many more of these super tiny research grants they are giving to universities around the country?

Re: “TUSD, Community Food Bank & Local Farmers Partner to Bring More Fresh Produce to Schools

ok, maybe he's not a troll...but when every conceivable tw article subject automatically gets turned back to either some version of "the poor are lazy" or "lower taxes and everything will magically get better" (like we haven't been trying that method long enough yet?), by the same commenters, I'm afraid I run short of vocabulary to describe it. Kneejerk? I mean, is there anything else that might be relevant to the discussion besides Takers and Taxes? Occasionally? I know we all hate TUSD, now the parents are the problem? I certainly don't see our local farmers out there being 'lazy', and none of them have health insurance or retirement savings for instance, unless their spouse is working. Walking J lost money every single year, and they were the best I know of at what they do. Sleeping Frog is on the rocks, etc.

Re: “TUSD, Community Food Bank & Local Farmers Partner to Bring More Fresh Produce to Schools

At the rate local farms are folding, this is quite timely. If we want to level the playing field between the big boys that don't play fair and the real people mom&pop operations, to something resembling a 'free market', then the only answer is to support it locally. As we all know, the feds are fully in the pockets of the bankers & friends; all you'll ever see from them is more regulations to keep the little people out of the game.

@Don: you're a troll, but if you want to see wrath, just tickle me with that one again. You don't attract "quality industry" when the bankers have offshored it all to China and India. Quit living in the 60's. America is a hollow shell of it's former self, and it ain't the morals of those at the bottom that have put it there: follow the don't lead anywhere on my block, that's for sure. Food stamps is all we got left, and your types are all lathered up to take that away too. Hubris. Greed is one of the 7 if I recall...

Re: “The Real Story Behind Lisa Frank

I buy every Lisa and Frank product; beautiful images. They are innovative, colorful, & breathtaking. With all the bright colors, one might think it would be too bold. But the colors fit very well yielding fantastic images. Every Calendar or a Binder with glorious images are worth the buy. I am so glad that she is getting the recognition that she should. No one in the market has dared to take the hot colors to this level. Hot pink, bright blues, I would generally turn away from these colors. But, the way the colors are blended, they give it an admiring look. Everywhere I have shopped, people walk through the aisle, and when they look at the lisa frank products from the corner of the eye, they go back, pick it up and put it in their cart. Simply Wonderful.

Re: “Complete Your Summer Reading with this Sci-Fi Classic

Slaughterhouse 5 the book was tedious, but it was made into a fairly entertaining movie in the early 70's. Not sure if its on Netflix.

Phillip Jose Farmer's works are great reading, your friend should peruse "To Your Scattered Bodies Go"; the first of the RiverWorld series, which was based on a short story the young P.J. Farmer submitted for a story contest promoted by a pulp sci-fi magazine of the day. He won the contest but never collected the prize money since the mag went out of business. Sadly, he passed away some years ago so not sure if all of his stuff is still in print, Bookman's might have some.

Re: “Here I Go, Defending Diane Douglas Again

Very funny, Equal Opportunity. Thanks. After reading your comment I looked up Huicochea's tweets on the meeting:

Apparently Ms. Huicochea got taken to task during the board meeting for writing a story on how TUSD's Early Learning Centers are about $800K in debt. So the fun of watching Arizona infighting extends to watching our elected representatives scold the media for reporting public institutions' business to the public.

My favorite piece of political entertainment, though, is still this one:
...and its sequel, when the TUSD governing board passed the Superintendent's massive compensation increase and then we learned that the details of the proposal had not been communicated to members of the board minority until just before the vote.

Even "funnier," in every sense of the word -- the way the Pima Dems continue to "look the other way," both literally and figuratively, acting as though the only clown shows going on in Arizona are taking place in the Phoenix area.

Re: “Complete Your Summer Reading with this Sci-Fi Classic

Well I can't argue with that! Although you will no doubt catch a ton of flack for bashing Vonnegut, I found Slaughterhouse Five tedious mostly for the lack of any sort of personality in the main character; a man who seems to lack any sort of compelling nature.

Hey Merri Tucker, instead of expecting someone else's money to solve your problems, stop being a member of the working poor. Get better skills, better attitude, better job, maybe dare I say it, a partner that works and contributes. My wagon's full, no room for you and your family.

Re: “Here I Go, Defending Diane Douglas Again

What fun Arizona is. And the opportunities to laugh at our elected representatives (and sometimes hired public administrators) fighting with one another and mismanaging their constituents' business is, fortunately for us, not limited to Phoenix.

Did you catch Hicks walking out on Sanchez at yesterday evening's TUSD Board meeting, David? If not, get your popcorn out and enjoy the video of the August 25 meeting that will be available soon through this web page:

Re: “Sun Tran Strike: Day 20, Another Route is Added to Limited Bus Service

Whoever posted that most bus drivers are overweight and lazy is dead wrong. The things I see them do and put up with as a rider is nowhere near your description of them.
whoever said they were frowning all the time is just getting that reaction because of their hateful, better than thou attitude as they step onto the bus. And to whoever said that using a reduced fair makes me a loser... working poor use the money saved to pay for utilities, school supplies etc. not drugs etc. why don't you pay that extra dollar every time that I get on the bus if this added expense is so easy to manage, or better yet pay the water bill or explain to my daughter's teachers why she doesn't have a binder or notebook. This argument should be focused on a mayor who needs to step up, if he has staff running the street car, why can't he get staff to drive busses on the weekend when a lot of service workers really need them?

Re: “'Between the World And Me': An Important Book on Race and Racism

"I'm an older, white, privileged male who does his best to comprehend the nature of racism in this country".

And there it is. This makes me sick David, and you make me sick. I am not kidding, exaggerating or trolling.

You bought into the narrative, by choice and are now spreading propaganda.

Tell me, does this book involve any personal responsibility by the author?

Sell out.
