Re: “Chuck Huckelberry Is Getting Tired of Ally Miller's Fishing Expedition

Superficial without merit on any of the topics. Records should be electronically retained and a simple search. If not we are paying and not what we are getting what we pay for as far as records keeping.

Re: “Noise Annoys

I think the "music" that "influenced" Mr Gelb et al was more the yowling of feral cats in the alleys of Tucson and discombobulated street poetry of the bohemian wino than the awesome soundtracks of any western movies no matter what era

Re: “Noise Annoys

Hey, Joshua...a "50s Western" would be cowboy music, like Rex Allen and Roy Rogers. The music that may have "influenced" Gabe Sullivan and Howe Gelb and others is more likely the Ennio Moricone soundtracks of Sergio Leone's "spagheti westerns" of the late 60s-early 70s. The ones that did so well with Clint Eastwood.

Re: “Hell Yes! The 2016 Tucson Weekly Endorsements

So what about all the rest of the people that are up for election? You can't just leave us hanging like that! Like county officials, county attorney, county recorder county assessor, county superintendent of schools and justices of The Supreme Court and judges of The superior court. Where is some information about them? I don't wanna just vote for somebody based on their political affiliation, it's nice to know some of the things they've done. If there's a website or something you could direct me to that be great. On a separate note how come they never let us know about the judges political affiliation? Thanks, Kris

Re: “Hell Yes! The 2016 Tucson Weekly Endorsements

When I was running for Assessor in the primary against Bill Staples, the Tucson Weekly interviewed me and we discussed many of the issues of what was going wrong in that office - the needless and costly litigation, the inadequate systems for valuing commercial property and mostly the horrible treatment of taxpayers who exercise their right to appeal. Since the primary I have even uncovered evidence that Bill Staples fraudulently issued notices of proposed corrections so he could avail himself of another opportunity to discriminate against a commercial taxpayer in court. If he is re-lected I seriously doubt he'll complete another term for all the wrong doing in his office.

Re: “Editor's Note

While Betts has done many good things, she has also:

1. Publically endorsed a campaign with Holocaust-denier [ADL] Norman Finkelstein.

2. Participated in an event using the IPMN "Steadfast Hope" curriculum. Dexter Van Zile from Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) reported extensively on the "Steadfast Hope Curriculum" as full of lies, and supportive of terror. The JCPA (nationwide umbrella organization for bi-partisan Jewish Community Relations Councils) condemned the IPMN as antisemitic. The JCPA's Ethan Felson conducted a training in Tucson showing the IPMN to regularly invoke racist, antisemitic, tropes.

3. Publically expressed solidarity with John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, authors who allege that the US government is controlled by pro-Israel lobbyists.

4. Picketed The Jewish Festival at the Tucson Jewish Community Center, demonizing Jews and Israel and frightening preschool children. (I was the staff photographer who took photos of her picketing.)

5. Self-identified as a member of Women In Black, an organization that is viewed by many as crossing the line between being anti-occupation and demonizing Israel and holding Israel disproportionately responsible for the conflict.

Does the County School Superintendent have any authority to try to correct the wrongs at TUSD?

You endorsed for Assessor, but not for County School Superintendent? What gives?

Re: “Hell Yes! The 2016 Tucson Weekly Endorsements

The majority on the TUSD Board must be broken up and replaced with independent thinkers. There are several qualified candidates. None of the incumbents should be re-elected.

What, no endorsement for the only candidate for County Attorney who supports the legalization of marijuana, a living minimum wage, and supports Mark Napier for Sheriff? (that'd be me) Maybe next time...?

Re: “Our Spoiled State Firing and Hiring System

You are right, Rick Spanier, Safier is not that kind of animal (the non-partisan kind). However, he often tries to frame his blog posts as though he is. In this one, for example, he pretends the issue is patronage hiring and firing. For the benefit of the occasional new reader who may at first be led to believe that what they see in these blogs is noble discourse produced by a reliable defender of sound practices in the management of public institutions, it's good when the comment streams call Safier out on his partisan hackery, so thank you for being one of those who has done so repeatedly and effectively. (Nice image of the manatee and the four minute mile.)

Safier's real motives are a mystery. It's clear what he can be expected to do: defend Pima Democratic Party candidates and the lines of argument being used to promote their continuing ability to manage Tucson's beleaguered public institutions, no matter how grave and obvious their misuse of public office has been. And the flip side: attack Republican office holders for doing the same things he pulls punches on when Democratic office holders do them.

But why? Commenters joke that he is motivated by getting dinner invitations to the Grijalvas' or appearances on Anne-Eve Pedersen's now defunct television program, but what's the real reason? I suspect it may be something similar to the argument made in a book I came across recently which defended the legacy of the Tammany Hall machine in NYC: "Tammany's corruption was real, but so was its heretofore forgotten role in protecting marginalized and maligned immigrants in desperate need of a political voice." (Machine Made: Tammany Hall and the Creation of Modern American Politics).

How about it, David? Care to fill us in? Maybe you could do an article on the legitimate role that lies, patronage, and graft can and should play in protecting the oppressed -- when it's people belonging to the right political party who practice them. Or you could write a review of the above-mentioned book saying just where you agree and disagree. At least then what you write in these blogs would be an HONEST representation of what you ACTUALLY believe, which is clearly NOT that lies, patronage and graft and those who practice them have no legitimate role in our public institutions, since you just endorsed two candidates for the Board of a public school district who were involved in this:

and who work in concert with a fellow Board member who did this:
