Illegal Utopia: Michoacan in Tucson
In Spring 2014, Mexican-born Tucson artist Martin Quintanilla put out a call to artists for a binational show on the theme of artistic freedom in times of political oppression. The result was "Illegal Utopia," shown at Acj Pátzcuaro, a state-run gallery in Patzcuaro, Michoacan. More than 25 artists from Arizona and Michoacan were involved in the show which reflected the title's theme in paintings, linocuts, etchings, screen prints, and cut paper by established and emerging artists. The show opens for its U.S. phase on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Studio One, 197 E. Toole Ave. Curator Quintanilla, who lives and paints in Tucson, is a former winner at the Efrain Vargas, Alfredo Zalce, and Alfonso Michel Biennials, as well as the Buffalo Exchange Arts Award. He ran La Malinche Gallery and Studio from 2008 to 2011 in Tucson, and is a former member of La Pura Neta arts collective. For more info on the show, search for the event's Facebook page.
Together in Art: Quintanilla and Janes
Saturday, Sept. 6 is going to be a busy night for the Quintanilla-Janes artist household and everyone who loves their work.If there's a local couple in Tucson who seem to live and breathe art, as well as perfectly support each other's work, it's Martin Quintanilla and Marcy Miranda Janes. They'll show their work together in "Black + White + Red All Over," a show with new linoprints by Quintanilla and cut paper work by Janes opening at the Haunted Hands Gallery, 439 N. Sixth Ave., Suite 195, starting Sept. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. The show description: "Intended to answer the age-old question. Or maybe just confuse the matter further." There's more amazing art this Saturday evening. Jeff Litvak's (one of the co-founders of Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery and Workshop) show "In the Distance," opens at the Contreras Gallery and Jewelry, 110 E. 6th St. This show is a series of oil paintings, along with an acrylic series of Tarot Card paintings. The other show is at Southbound Studios, 1136 E. Broadway, from 7 to 9 p.m. with work by Tracy Ledbetter, Adam Bramley, Eddie Anguilo, Gail Reilly and some beautiful black velvet paintings from Diane Von Bombshelter.September and October are looking like amazing months for art in Tucson. 'Out of this World' with Odyssey Storytellers
This month Odyssey Storytelling is going a little out of the norm, so to speak. The show, "Out of this World: Amazing Supernatural or Unforgettable," is Wednesday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, 1601 E. University Blvd. Curated by AZPM's own Tony Paniagua. Not only is it a chance to hear some stories from local storytellers—Paniagua has most likely done a great job pulling together a group of out-of-this-world storytellers—but turns out this is a great evening to catch a demonstration of the science center's new FullDome Digital Projection System, the planetarium's new projection system that gives planet lovers 360 degree views of the solar system and more.For more on Odyssey, visit storyartsgroup.org/odyssey, or go to the event's page on Facebook.
