STAFF PICK: The master of all he surveys, McConnell proved his dominance of mere mortals by taking his young Sahuaro team all the way to another state title, beating defending state champion Santa Rita along the way. Santa Rita is coached by Jim Ferguson, who played for McConnell, as did Tucson High coach Gary Lewis and Salpointe head Brian Peabody. McConnell, who has won more than 500 games at Sahuaro, retired from teaching a few years back, but shows no signs of slowing down as a coach. Long may he reign.
