Ballet Tucson, Nutcracker

This Nut's getting close to a Lifetime Achievement Award. Every year at Christmastime, Ballet Tucson pairs world-class visiting dancers with its superbly trained students in this holiday favorite. Choreographed by artistic director Mary-Beth Cabana, this year's version held to the troupe's high standards. Two dancers from American Ballet Theatre, Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner, provided the star power, along with Raymond Rodriguez and Karen Gabay of Ballet San José. A Ballet Arts student to watch, Hailey McNelis, was a Columbine. The traditional Victorian-style production glistens with falling snow and costumes in gem-colored velvets. This season, Ballet Tucson will ratchet up even more, hiring live musicians for the December show.
