WEEKEND JAM. Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, Tucson Police Department, Youth On Their Own and the Youth Volunteer Corps sponsor the third annual Jam Zone from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 10, at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 900 S. Randolph Way (just south of Hi Corbett Field). There will be jammin' music, dancing, tasty edibles and more. Teens ages 13 to 19 are invited to show off their cool cars and low-rider bicycles for prizes and enter the basketball shoot-out. Call 791-5223 for more information.

BIG, BIG BUGS. See an 11-foot locust spread its 22-foot wings, or a 19-foot praying mantis sit up and look for food. This isn't science fiction, it's the Tucson Children's Museum exhibit Big, Big Bugs, on display during regular mall hours through September 2 at Park Mall, 5870 E. Broadway. Admission is $3, with discounts for groups with a reservation.

EXPRESS YOURSELF. ArtExpress. 601 E. Sixth St. 791-2995. Turn scraps into art. Just stop in during store hours and go to it. There are new projects every two weeks, geared towards kids ages 4 to 12. Cost is $3. ArtExpress is open Tuesday through Saturday. Call 791-2995 for information.

GET WET. Sick of going to the mall to cool off? Head out to Justin's Water World and spend some real quality family time in the water. There are plenty of slides and pools for children of all ages. Family picnics are welcome, but please don't bring any grills, glass or alcohol. Refreshments are available from Eegees. Grab plenty of sunscreen and head nine miles west on Ajo Way from I-19, then north on San Joaquin for two-and-a-half miles. Justin's is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday and holidays. BACK TO SCHOOL. The Tucson Shalom House, a non-profit, non-sectarian housing and counseling program for women and children, wants to send their children back to school feeling confident and ready to learn. They need lots of school supplies like notebooks, pencils, pens, pencil boxes, folders, crayons, backpacks and more. School clothes are also in high demand. STAR STRUCK. Flandrau Science Center. UA Campus. 621-STAR. Watch as our Solar System comes alive with a host of endangered animal friends guiding the way in Our Place In Space, screening at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday. Continuing through August 9, this show introduces kids ages 8 and under to the magic of our universe. Children ages 9 to 11 learn what makes up our Solar System in The Friendly Stars, screening at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. See what really lives in an aquarium (besides the fish) with Flandrau's new hands-on exhibit, The World Within. There are many other new exhibits to see and try. Exhibits are free with admission. AT HOME MOMS. At Home Moms is a national, non-profit network of at-home mothers. Local chapters offer meetings, playgroups, outings and more. See what they're all about at an informational meeting for the East/Central chapter at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 14. Kathy Busch, Instructional Specialist for Pima County Cooperative Extension, will be on hand to talk about diet and exercise. Call Amy at 721-5787 for information.

BICYCLE BONANZA. If that banana-seat bike your child has long since abandoned in favor of a 10-speed is it out in the garage collecting dust, Saturn of Tucson, Sabino Cycles and the Boys & Girls Clubs are eager to get its wheels spinning again. Bring your unused bikes to Saturn of Tucson at 6020 E. Speedway. The folks at Sabino Cycles will get the bikes back in tip top shape and the Boys & Girls Clubs will distribute them to area kids, with the goal of getting every kid in Tucson a bike of their own. BOWL-O-RAMA. Rainbow Families, Tucson's gay, lesbian, and bisexual parents network, takes a stoll down the lanes at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, at the Fiesta Lanes, 501 W. River Road. COMPUTER LESSONS. Free basic computer instruction is available for children and adults in low-income families at 5 p.m. Sundays. There are 12 computers available for these ongoing classes. Call 889-4876 for registration and information.

THE PARENT CONNECTION. The Parent Connection, 5326 E. Pima St., provides families with educational and support services. The parent/child program allows parents to play together while encouraging the overall development of the child. Learn how to better set limits and nurture young children. Facilities include a library and indoor/outdoor play area, as well as a family-friendly referral index to community resources. Classes, lecture series and support groups for moms and dads are also available. Call 321-1500 for information.
