ENVIRONMENT

TREECYCLING. The City of Tucson is recruiting volunteers to help direct traffic and accept Christmas trees to recycle into compost on Saturday, January 4 and 11, at the TREE-cycling Christmas tree drop-off sites. Residents may bring Old Tannenbaum to any Home Depot store between 8 a.m. and noon on those days. Free bags with information on composting, recycling and other local environmental programs will be offered with each cut-tree donation. Call 791-5000 for information.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE. The Tucson/Pima County hazardous waste disposal site, 2440 W. Sweetwater Drive, is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Friday and Saturday for household waste disposal. Outreach centers are open from 8 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of the month at the following locations: Eastside City Hall, 7575 E. Speedway; TFD Fire Academy, 797 E. Ajo Way; and the Park and Ride parking lot located on Ina Road one block west of Oracle Road (at Via Ponte). For more information call 740-3340.

RECYCLING CENTERS. The following neighborhood drop-off centers are open 24 hours daily: Booth-Fickett Magnet School, 7240 E. Calle Arturo, and Morrow Education Center, 1010 E. 10th St. Some city and county landfills also have recycling centers. Call 791-5000 for hours and locations. Multi-material recycling facilities are located at Freedom Recycling, 1825 W. Price Road, near Roger and Romero roads. Call 696-0660 for hours.

WOMEN BUILD HOUSES. Be informed, independent and environmentally friendly with help from Women Build Houses, a non-profit network dedicated to increasing women's access to building skills. They offer a host of sliding-scale classes, including: greywater irrigation (household drainwater from sinks and showers), straw bale technology, eco-friendly household chemicals and cleaners, and passive solar design.
