As I type this, CNN.com’s lead story is this, a piece on the JonBenet Ramsey case. The No. 2 story is this, about a judge finding the idiot warrantless NSA spying program unconstitutional.
Um, so a 10-year-old murder case takes precedence over a hugely important constitutional matter.
Other stories included on CNN.com’s top latest news as I type: JonBenet’s family knew cops were closing in; judge gives teens jail reprive to play football; J-Lo and ex want tell-all fight out of court.
God help us all.
This article appears in Aug 17-23, 2006.

Wait… J-Lo and Marc Anthony split up and it’s not the #2 story?!?!
What’s America coming to?
Oh, it’s the other guy she USED to be married to. Never mind. No wonder it’s down so low. 🙂
It’s a shame we take our rights and freedoms for granted, so long s we have lurid murders and celebrity gossip to keep us entertained.
This is what happens in the marketplace of ideas. Child murders sell. Constitutional crises don’t. We vote with our remotes. We say the news stinks, and yet what stories get the eyeballs which translate into ad dollars? You want better TV news, WATCH better TV news for cryin’ out loud and give those producers of quality current events programming some justification for their futile existance.
It used to be that CNN was THE place for news, because they were the first ones to go all-news, all the time. Remember during Desert Storm, when they were reporting from their hotel rooms as the bombs were going off? It seemed so revolutionary. Now, we know better. But I think we all have a hard time realizing that CNN is no longer what we thought it was. Or perhaps it never was. It’s kind of like the adult version of Santa Claus.
