In The New York Times on Feb. 4, there was an article on what may be the next the step in gotta-go-green consciousness (or guilt, depending on what side of the bed you crawl out of).
A couple decided to get rid of their electricity-loving fridge, and they seem to be doing just fine. Only issue: no room for already-prepped foods, so they need to make more time to prepare real food.
I thought it was interesting, however, that they still use a freezer–so they aren’t completely free of using some type of electric appliance to keep their food from rotting.
Next step: Bringing back the fruit cellar?
This article appears in Feb 12-18, 2009.

how many trips to the store do they need to make every week?
@rita
Since they have a freezer to keep meat, I suspect they only >need
rats … it ate most of my comment.
Depends how close to the store they live — it might be bikeable.

fresh souls!
Thanks for the image of the eye flying through the air… pretty cool. And yeah, I’m not so sure about fruit cellars. Maybe it depends on the demons that take over your body or who you choose to bury there?
