Water Pressure: Rate Hikes Ahead!

The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted yesterday to hike your sewer fees by 45 percent or so. The Weekly’s Dave Devine first warned you it was coming a few weeks back. Now Dave, who hasn’t yet joined embraced the blog, brings us this dispatch about the possibility of steep water bill increases: The Citizens…

Weird Goings-On at ‘Star’ — Are They Bankruptcy Clues?

We’ve received word from a couple of folks over at Tucson Newspapers that something rather strange is going on. Here’s what we’ve heard: Star employees, who normally are paid on Friday, got paychecks today–and those paychecks included cash-outs for whatever Lee Enterprises stock the employee had. What does all this mean? Our best guess–and this…

Did You Have a Good Valentine’s Day?

I’m not much for making a big deal about Valentine’s Day, except when it comes to helping my son fill out the obligatory valentines for his classmates and helping him go through each one when he gets home. You forget how important this exchange was in grade school. Nothing has changed. But I was reminded…

Steve Emerine, R.I.P.

Steve Emerine, a former Pima County assessor and editor at the Arizona Daily Star, has died. He was 73. He’d been writing a column for our sister paper, Inside Tucson Business. You can find ITB’s report on Steve’s death here, and the Star’s here.

No Fridge?

In The New York Times on Feb. 4, there was an article on what may be the next the step in gotta-go-green consciousness (or guilt, depending on what side of the bed you crawl out of). A couple decided to get rid of their electricity-loving fridge, and they seem to be doing just fine. Only issue:…

Aussie Ben Lee has abandoned his trademark catchy guitar-pop songs to make an odd, quasi-concept album that irks more than it inspires. The Rebirth of Venus intends to be a celebration of traditionally feminine qualities. I imagine that Lee considers Venus to be a thoughtful yet exuberant rallying call for the death of irony and…

The Skinny

EXPERIMENT GOES AWRY The Tucson Weekly mentioned last week that state lawmakers, in their efforts to close a $1.6 billion budget hole in the current fiscal year, had stripped $22.5 million in funding from the 21st Century Fund. (See “The Bucks Stop Here,” Feb. 5.) Instrumental in blocking the funding–which goes to Science Foundation Arizona,…

CLOUDS, TORNADOES, TAPES, TUCSON It’s been a pretty busy year for Elephant 6, for an entity that supposedly no longer exists. The musical collective and record label, whose members favor ’60s-influenced, often experimental music recorded on primitive devices, claimed several years ago to be calling it quits. Indeed, the label is no longer extant–but what…

I’ve been reading about the progression of Noble Beast on The New York Times’ Measure for Measure blog. Since last March, Andrew Bird–performing a sold-out show at the Rialto on Saturday, Feb. 14–has posted notes about and drafts of songs for Noble Beast, most specifically the first song on the record, “Oh No.” Bird wrote…
