Just last week, The Skinny advised y’all to keep on eye on Republican state lawmakers because they might try to find a way to prevent voters from deciding the fate of the expanded voucher program that GOP legislators and Gov. Doug Ducey tried to put into place last year.

Well, lookie here: the Arizona Republic reports that movement is afoot on that front:

A Republican state lawmaker is discussing with colleagues and outside groups a plan that could knock Proposition 305 off the November ballot before voters can decide the fate of Arizona’s expanded school-voucher program.

The goal is to repeal last year’s legislation that expanded the ESA program to all 1.1 million public-school students and replace it with legislation intended to address criticisms of the expansion, according to more than a half-dozen people familiar with the wide-ranging discussions.

The effort could backfire. Last year, Save Our Schools Arizona was able to gather enough signatures to force a referendum on the voucher plan. Making them go out and do it all over again with this kind of chickenshit dirty trick will energize teachers and other public ed supporters, which will make it even easier to turn them out in November—which is the last thing that Gov. Doug Ducey needs as he runs for reelection.

  1. Why would you want to force kids back into the public schools that are underfunded, under performing and being closed at record rate. Only to over crowd the existing classrooms. have you really thought this through, or is it an attempt to bankrupt the tax payer and thus the country?

  2. By underfunding our public schools, we are setting them up to “under perform”.
Check out the state rankings when it comes to spending and performance. Our public teachers are doing an amazing job even without adequate funding. Imagine what they could do with reasonable state backing.

Stop strong arming parents into privatizing education.

  3. Strong arming? That is too funny. They are fleeing in droves. Many families have taken on the financial burden of tuition in private schools. Try to remember that private schools are also providing and maintaining facilities within tuition revenues. The public schools have failed miserably at that because they became too big to manage.

Just look at the fiasco at Pueblo HS this week. That really says it all. If they caught grade changing there, how many have they not yet caught? And why was it done? Let’s look to the state rankings.

  4. Al V. Tucson Thank you for your attachment. I was at both Board meetings. I wish that more of the public were interested enough to sit through or even comment on what happens and how it happens in realtime might give all a little more insight. There are many facets to our problems in TUSD which are difficult to understand unless you can directly engage and participate. I hope you will vote in the upcoming elections. Susie

  5. Welcome to KochAzona….

This is not only bullschit, but has to be an unconstitutional end run against the voters’ preferences.

Someday, soon, within the next 10 years, Arizona will be so blue, it may cause a new revival of Rhythm and Blues music standing on the corner in Flagstaff, Arizona, …with a small chorus of angry Republican Old farts…of course… Singing the Blues…

I’m beginning to think that our Legislative process is inhabited by a group of azzholes who have Alzheimer’s Disease, and can only remember how life was in the 1950s,

    And who elected these morons?

Angry old white Republicans who can only remember how life was back in the 1950s, who probably have early onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

News to you Angry old white Republicans who can only remember how life was back in the 1950s……

You are going to die off soon, or forget how to vote, and thankfully, a new generation of Arizonians will erase your legacy from the history books.

    Just sayin’…..
