Best Local TV Newscast

KVOA--Channel 4

READERS' AND STAFF PICK: A perennial favorite in the Old Pueblo, Eyewitness News on Channel 4 again wins with staggering numbers. We honestly believe this is partially due to Patty Weiss' unofficial function as the emotional conduit for our city. When the news is dreadful, Patty seems genuinely pained; uplifting human interest stories, on the other hand, bring forth a radiant smile and a feeling that all will be well. It's as though this Donna Reed is tucking us in every night. Other members of the newscast perform equally vital roles. Thousands of Tucsonans wouldn't dream of beginning their weekends without Michael Goodrich reaching into his Weather Wrangler's Magic Party Pocket, throwing a handful of Styrofoam peanuts into the air, and announcing, in a deadpan and utterly joyless voice, "Whoopee." (Goodrich's stoic stare and pursed lips when listening to the anchors engage in unspeakable banter are absolutely priceless.) We are also partial to Dan Ryan, the weekday sportscaster, who delivers his stories with a savage smirk and a maniacal gleam in his eye. No objectivity here.
