Rillito River Parkway

READERS' PICK: The Rillito River Parkway, a linear park on the banks of the Rillito River, winds along the usually dry arroyo for about five miles, from Campbell Avenue west to La Cholla Boulevard. This is a beautiful, landscaped bike route for commuting or recreation, paved with a center stripe, warning signs, bridges over all washes and no street crossings. (It goes under all thoroughfares.) Entry is from Campbell, First Avenue, Oracle Road, Flowing Wells Road or La Cholla. A good way to get to the route is to follow the Mountain Avenue bike route north to Limberlost, then pedal east to Campbell. By the way, this is not a ride for "super jock" racers, racing teams or long distance tourers. It's for recreational riders with families and friends. You'll be sharing the route with dogs on leashes, walkers, runners, skaters and families. Along the way you'll see Childrens' Memorial Park with picnic tables, play equipment and restrooms. Also, at various points there are facilities for physical fitness training. Route extensions are planned east from Campbell and west from La Cholla. This parkway is part of an "Adopt-a-River" program co-sponsored by the Casas Adobes Rotary Club, Golden Eagle Distributors and Pima County Parks and Recreation. Rillito River Parkway is open from sunrise to sunset.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: Mountain Avenue.
