Gap Kids
Tucson Mall

READERS' AND STAFF PICK: We know many a mom who would shop for herself at Gap Kids if the sizes weren't on the wee side. Except for some classics--khakis, blue jeans, long-sleeved shirts and polos--fashions here are not simply clones of Gap clothing for adults. Designs incorporate varied textures, colors, patterns and notions--buttons, ribbons and the like. Accessories carry the same themes for easy mix and match; we especially love the hats. Gap Kids, located at the Tucson Mall, carries sizes for babies to pre-teens. The store has an open-return policy, which means it will take anything back regardless of how much time has passed. Gap Kids rotates its stock frequently and much of the merchandise ends up on the sale rack at some point during the year. And this brings us to one more thing we like about Gap Kids: The sale rack is a treasure trove for fathers who are seasonally challenged. You know who you are: The ones who habitually dress your kids in pants and long-sleeved shirts on hot April afternoons or who allow little Ben and Tiffany to leave the house in tank tops and shorts on gray December days.

READERS' POLL RUNNER-UP: TIE--Mervyn's and Buffalo Kids, we shop them both. And at both you'll find: grand selection, 100-percent cotton, onesies, rompers, denims, T-shirts, hairbows, caps, jammies, colorful socks and lots of the Sprockets and OshKosh brands. But there's one main difference between the two kids' clothing stores: At one place the clothes have never been worn, and at the other they're being recycled. A few additional minor differences prevail. Mervyn's has some great sales; Buffalo has some great sales people. Mervyn's clothes are starchy crisp and brightly new; Buffalo's clothes are soft and smell like your mom's laundry detergent. Mervyn's takes charge cards; Buffalo donates money to local charities if you don't take a bag. Each store has its place and purpose while outfitting our children. Mervyn's has three locations; Buffalo Kids is at 1702 E. Prince Road.
