Best Mexican Restaurant Without A Dining Room

STAFF PICK: It's just a tiny storefront counter with standing room for about four or five patrons only, but El Rapido, 77 W. Washington St., has been serving some of Tucson's best Mexican comida as long as we can remember. It's not unusual to see folks sitting out on the curb, wolfing their carne asada burros and chicken fajitas, unable to wait until they get back to the office or the car. El Rapido advertises "Tucson's Finest Tamales," and they are. The sweet masa is silky smooth, with none of the corn slivers you get between your teeth elsewhere. The red chile is rich with juicy sweetness. El Rapido also serves breakfast: chorizo or machaca with scrambled eggs, frijoles and tortilla. If you work in one of the city's high-rise office tombs, you really are a lucky soul: If the slave-driving boss scorns your leaving the desk, El Rapido delivers downtown any minimum order of $5. Have them send over a dozen of their velvety thin flour tortillas for $2.90 while you're at it.
