Best Café News South Of The University

STAFF PICK: Finally, when you need a java jolt and you're on that side of the massive U, no need to despair. Bee-line over to the newish Legends Café. Despite the university's piggish gobbling of businesses on the north side of Sixth Street, Legends opened last May on the south side, at 1118 E. Sixth St. Gourmet coffee and espresso can be had, along with lots of home cooking--good omlets; hearty soups; other-than-usual dressings, like chutney mango and territorial herb; plus comforting homemade sweets like banana bread and apple pie. Unlike the big, hungry, greedy neighbor to the north, Legends seems to care about students and their pocketbooks. There's a 99-cent breakfast for early birds, but we particiularly like the Study-Break Special--a cup of soup or bagel and cream cheese with a cup of coffee.
