AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY. Throughout the month of February, Tucson/Pima Library hosts a series of programs in honor of African American History Month. Actor James Oliver presents Poetry In Black, a dramatic performance of African American poetry in which Oliver portrays God and the preacher, mother, father and child at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, at the Main Library, 101 N. LAMPLIGHT READING. The Lamplight Reading Series reconvenes at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 4, at The Grill, 100 E. Congress St. Bisbee poets August Schaefer, John Sullivan and Patty Tabaczinsky and New Mexico poet Judyth Hill will be featured. Call 743-0940 for information.

DISCUSSION GROUP. The Borders' Literary Discussion Group meets for the first time Monday, February 5, at Borders Books and Music, 4235 N. Oracle Road, to discuss the group's format and reading list. POETRY WORKSHOP. The UA Poetry Center offers New Voice and Range Readers' Workshop for Writers from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, February 15 through March 21, and April 4 through May 9, at the UA Poetry Center, 1216 N. POETRY READING. The UA Poetry Center hosts free poetry readings at 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the UA Modern Languages Building auditorium. Gustav Sobin, postmodern poet and expatriate in France, reads from selected works on February 7. Call 321-7760 for information.

CALL FOR ENTRIES. Modern Poetry Society seeks new poetry for both adult and youth writers. Prizes range from $10 to $500.
