The marijuana industry is beginning to show more respect for women. By that, the publication Marijuana Business Daily means less wet T-shirt contests at medical marijuana dispensaries, as well as fewer ads of half-naked women with bongs, and more, way more, top executive positions in the weed economy.

A recent survey by the magazine says that women now make a “sizable and growing” portion of high ranks in the industry, including 63 percent of high-level positions at testing labs; 48 percent of executive spots in processing and infused product manufacturing, where women make up 48 percent of “key decision-making” positions like being the owner, CEO and/or president.

“While years ago it was rare to see women in executive roles on the retail side of the industry, they now fill 38 percent of those positions at dispensaries and recreational stores.”

All-in-all, women hold 36 percent of leadership positions in the entire industry, which is noticeably higher than the 22 percent lead positions in U.S. companies in general, according to 2014 figures from the Pew Research Center, the Marijuana Business Daily article by Becky Olson says

Other sectors, such as wholesale and investment, have fewer women in exec positions, but those numbers are still higher than the average for all U.S. businesses, Olson writes.

There’s still room for much improvement in other areas, check out Olson’s article for more detail on that.

From the article:

The results reveal that women are more likely to hold executive titles in every major sector of the cannabis industry than in the general workforce at large. This indicates that women have more opportunities to climb the ladder in the marijuana industry and are making quicker progress toward those goals than females in all other industries as a whole in the U.S.

It also reflects how the cannabis industry has matured and abandoned some of the practices that alienated women as both professionals and consumers.

The survey was conducted online on Oct. 6 and 7, and the findings include responses from 632 cannabis executives and professionals.

Some highlights:

Women hold 36% of leadership positions in the entire industry. That’s significantly higher than the 22% average for U.S. companies in general, according to 2014 data from the Pew Research Center. The national figures are pushed lower by heavy male executive representation in industries like commercial banking and the government (which includes the military), according to a 2013 study conducted by the University of Denver’s Colorado Women’s College.

The University of Denver study found that in newer sectors – such as technology and social media – “women are better represented in positional leadership roles.” That phenomenon certainly seems to be playing out in the cannabis industry and is supported by the results of the survey.

In addition to testing labs, other cannabis sectors are also truly excelling at female representation in the executive ranks, most notably processing and infused product manufacturing, where women hold 48% of key decision-making positions such as owner/founder, chief executive officer and president.

While years ago it was rare to see women in executive roles on the retail side of the industry, they now fill 38% of those positions at dispensaries and recreational stores.

  1. Through Artificial Selection Experiments, strains of Marijuana have been developed by the Marijuana Drug Industry that substantially increase the potency of the Drug. As such, its’ use poses serious potential consequences. The “Medical Marijuana” of today is NOT like the Marijuana used in the 70’s and 80’s.

While this Drug is effective in treating some medical conditions; Muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis, Nausea from cancer chemotherapy, Poor appetite and weight loss caused by chronic illness, such as HIV, or nerve pain, Seizure disorders, and
Crohn’s disease, its’ use for Medical purpose should be supported by Scientific evidence, including Clinical Trials, and regulated by the FDA; closely monitored by the tending Physician and State Department of Health..

The major consumers of this Drug, if legalized for so-called recreational purposes, will be the younger generation; destroying the very fabric/future of our Democracy.

This Drug should NOT be legalized for recreational purposes!!!

  2. The basic genome of cannabis has not changed in a million + years it has not gotten any stronger it has just been more refined as what gets to market no longer has by product stems and seeds and dirt and what ever they stuck in to increase weight. There is no monies being spent on discovery of the possibilities of the plant the monies are spent studying the possible damage of the plant. Monies to study the possibility of the criminal and economic side of the plant. Studies have always been targeted to the industry of enforcement and prosecution and incarceration and seizures and criminal. the people in the government don’t want this to end sot they have Joe Arpaio being guest speaker in Sun City. being brought to you by the “MOMFORCE OF AZ” and Joe will have his swat team there to show what you are voting for and how they will enforce new legislation.

If Mpp and the groups supporting them get this proposition on the ballot and passed it will essentially end all Medical Marijuana in Arizona. It is a simple question with billions spent and focused on limiting the supply and study of marijuana why would you want to challenge that?

The proposed proposition of MPP has no provisions for MMJ just a promise that this imaginary board made up of the Arpaios and the swat members and a few tax collection dispensary owners will recognize the need to keep it going will will just collect and fund medical research as we deem necessary or not one of them or the dispensary owners are qualified to make that determination.

Vote NO dont sign the petition of MPP challenge it signatures challenge and road block every attempt by the intrusion of civil rights and teft of property

  4. Francis> WRONG>Cannabis has been manipulated since before recorded time it has been cross breeding of 25,000 years about completes the manipulation. I read the study by UC Berkley we now have weavel free cotton and insect resistant corn we have added to the plants genome with another However Cannabis cannot increase introduce a new canibanoid or make the existing one stronger or change the existing one to something different

  5. I like this increased strength it depend on what part of the plant it is from how old the plant was when harvested. Not one dispensary will give you a test result on the exact product in your hand you are buying. It is quiet simple with Hydro grows and market pressures the quality has gone way down. I would bet these 10 a gram on this day is weight and that is all poor quality laden with nutrients and whatever Fish emulsions, bat shit, I get better quality from street product that is given to me.
