The best bet tomorrow and Sunday for base ball fans is down at historic 107-year-old Warren Ballpark in Bisbee, where John “Button” Salmon and “Prince Hal” Chase will be honored at the Seventh Annual Copper City Classic Vintage Base Ball Tournament. Button Salmon, who gave the University of Arizona its “Bear Down” motto, played baseball as a catcher during the summer of 1925 for the Douglas Blues of the outlaw Frontier league. On the infield with him were former White Sox players Chick Gandil and Buck Weaver, as well as player-manager Hal Chase, touted by Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb as the best defensive first baseman they’s ever seen. All three were kicked out of organized baseball for their alleged complicity in fixing the 1919 World Series. See the Friends of Warren Ballpark website and Facebook page for details!
