If you’re an Arizona basketball fan, you already know that the ‘Cats ended up beating the Stanford Cardinal 73-66 last night at the McKale Center—and if you were watching the game on television, you likely noted the commentary of ESPN color analyst and basketball great Bill Walton.

Being a web producer/social media person/guy with a Facebook account, I couldn’t escape the mass of Facebook and Twitter messages that rained down, pouring disdain for ESPN color analyst and basketball great Bill Walton, who apparently was either completely absurd last night:

In fact, UA fans were pretty unhappy in general with Walton, it seems:

Well, we’ve decided to get down to the bottom of this by contacting Walton on Twitter:

If the big man throws dowwwwwn a response, we’ll let you know. But below the jump, we’ve got a few other thoughts on Walton’s commentary last night—as well as an odd resemblance a ‘Cats fan noticed.

  1. I think Walton is awesome. Expand your minds. Free yourself from your conventional commentator-prison, man. Dude is hilarious, insightful and above all — original.

  6. I love Wildcat basketball but his annoying comments and blather took my attention away from basketball to disgust for Walton. He sounded like an authority on all things basketball and like the coaches were idiots. he sounded like he was there to find fault with coaches and players.
    I found him highly offensive. I wound up shutting off the sound so I could enjoy the ballgame. I will not watch him again.

  7. To be fair, I don’t think he hates the U of A. His son went here, remember. I didn’t get to watch any of the U of A game, but I did watch some of the UCLA – Washington game he did tonight. He was bashing UCLA for playing boring and their fans for being bored – and remember, this is where he went to school.

    Personally, I think he’s a little over the top and annoying, but I still find him entertaining. If anything he just makes me laugh.

  8. If only he could confine himself to the occasional insightful comment, Walton would be tolerable. He does know the game and I don’t think he has it in for the Wildcat, the Bruins or any other team. He seems instead to think his way is the best, perhaps the only, way. And as a classmate of mine said long ago of Charles Dickens, he must be paid by the word. Wednesday evening he was so obnoxious to one and a half listeners/viewers in this household (one of us could just barely stand hearing him while the other was close to barfing) that we muted him and Dave and the noise from the fans. And if I heard him correctly before giving him the hook, he disparaged Kevin Parrom and Angelo Chol, both of whom contributed substantially to the Cats’ win. Please, ESPN, send him and that bus off to the Bigs – 10, East, etc. – and especially to the SEC and ACC. No mas Guillermo.
