Perhaps this is news best conveyed by Jim Nintzel, since the band provided the name for his dog, but I beat him to it, so there. Wilco are coming back to town, this time playing the TCC Music Hall, with the legendary Jonathan Richman opening on September 19th. Tickets go on sale Friday via Ticketmaster. Seriously, if you want to go to this show, plan to buy tickets Friday. They will not be around for long.

UPDATE COURTESY OF LINDA RAY: There’s a presale tomorrow on Wilco’s site.

ANOTHER UPDATE VIA RIALTO MANAGER, CURTIS MCCRARY: FYI this will all be onsale through Ticketmaster because that’s what the TCC uses… not through Rialto ticketing. And yes there’s a fanclub presale, and yes, Rialto members have access to tickets Thursday via TCC/Ticketmaster.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. Why are bands being referred to as plural nouns in TW? A band is a singular noun in America and therefore, “Wilco is coming back to town.”

  3. @Tshupa: The Associated Press Stylebook calls it differently (http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=ask_faq):

Q: Do music groups take singular verbs, as do collective nouns, or plural verbs, as with sports teams?
A: AP Stylebook entry on “collective nouns” says band names take plural verbs. The Fantastic Shakers have won many awards.

  4. @Dan Gibson: You might say “The Fantastic Shakers have won many awards” because of the “s” at the end of the band’s name, but chatting in someone’s living room you would not say “Rage Against the Machine are coming to town,” unless the living room was in London. I grew up with the AP Stylebook for a few decades, but I think it’s probably too rigid for the Internet. I would argue that blogs should observe the “How-People-Really-Talk Stylebook.”

  5. Tshupa: Your point is valid, but rules are rules. I try to not let these things bother me.

  6. Red Star thinks of it this way: suppose the impossible, a Beatles reunion in the Old Pueblo.

The Dan Gibson could post “The Beatles Are Coming to Town” or “The Beatles Is Coming to Town.”

Wilco is a dumb name for a band, it’s garage bandish…

  7. Red Star is right. These guys don’t know what they’re doing. With a name like that, they will never go anywhere.
