In case you hadn’t noticed, our fair governor Jan Brewer stepped out this weekend, informing Secretary of State Ken Bennett that she was going to be out of the state for the week, making him acting Governor as per the state constitution.
However, Brewer hesitated to explain exactly where she had gone off to—and her staff wasn’t much help. According to an Associated Press report yesterday, Brewer’s spokesman Matthew Benson said that she was out of the state on official business, and that was “all I can disclose at this time,” which is exactly the kind of thing you want to tell the media when a state’s top executive skips town.
Well, it turns out that Brewer has made an appearance, visiting an Arizona soldier who is recovering from injury in a Washington, D.C. area hospital.
According to the AP, Brewer paid a visit to Army combat medic Mason Steill at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Apparently, Steill is the grandson of a Maricopa County employee, and was reportedly “thrilled” by the visit, said his grandmother.
No word on where the Gov. is off to next (though any guesses that she’s on her way to the White House are to be treated as “ridiculous”), but we’ll be paying attention. After all, it’s nice knowing where the head of our state is from time to time, right?

She’s hiking the Appalachian Trail
Are we certain a little trip to rehab isn’t in the trip somewhere???
I think this is a wonderful thing – glad we have a Governor that stands up to Hussein and supports our troops
Well, while she’s out of town at least she can’t do any harm to the state. Or CAN she?
tucson weekly are sooooooo bais its not funny please write fair storys also mr .mendez maybe a few more years in school will help you out….
I understand she is getting some X-Ray CEUs as part of getting ready for her next position.
@ronjb441960: If I felt like going that far for a gag, I’d edit the Wiktionary definition of “irony” to include a link to your comment.
Ronjb441960, it would appear that YOUR school had more important things than grammar and proper punctuation to deal with? Talk about an ironic post.
“…reportedly ‘thrilled’ by the visit, said his grandmother.” Are you implying the grandmother doesn’t know for sure if the lad was thrilled?
I believe the Associated Press and/or Washington Post broke this story? The media in AZ isn’t too concerned over her disappearance even though it’s a business trip.
A relevant question is WHO is paying for this trip? Brewer or us? If it’s us, it’s our business to know.
While the governor’s visit with the injured soldier is laudable, I wonder how often she’s gone to see other wounded soldiers during her tenure. Given her proclivities for kissing up to the 1% and corporations, her trip to Washington while all the jockeying and finagling to avoid the ‘fiscal cliff is raging seems more than a bit coincidental. Is she perhaps trying to position herself for a 2016 presidential run or vice-presidential bid?
The state would be far better served if she stayed home and figured out how to pull Arizona’s educational system out of the basement.
Why in the world do we think Brewer should let us know what she is doing? It’s not, after all, as if we pay her salary and expenses.
Rumor on twitter is she is in Afghanistan.
It appears ronjb441960 went to school DURING the Brewer era. You know, where the custodian has to double as the grammar teacher, due to budget cuts.
I think given her lack of insight on the needs of arizonans. this is a convenient stop and visit of staffs family, soo who is she hiding from?
She’s off to Afghanistan to learn more terror tactics from the Taliban
