Well, Best of Tucson® is finished. Adam Kurtz, Irene Messina and
I spent some quality time at Weekly World Central last Saturday
and put the final touches on the issue. I have to say, it looks damn
fine. Look for it on a distribution rack and/or computer screen near
you next Thursday, Sept. 24.

If you just can’t wait to get your hands on the Best of Tucson®,
though, and/or you want to get your groove on, ’80s-style, I strongly
recommend heading down to Laffs Comedy Caffe next Wednesday, Sept. 23.
To celebrate our 25th anniversary, and to have a little bit of fun with
our Best of Tucson® theme—1984—we’re having a Back to
the ’80s Karaoke Night. We’ll be announcing all of the winners and
handing out copies of the issue at the wingding—and that’ll be
your first chance to get the 411 on all of the Best of Tucson®
results. (We’re holding our online edition and early print distribution
until Thursday next week.) Doors open at 7:30, and the warbling starts
at 8.

It’s going to be a fun event—and admission is free!—so I
highly recommend stopping by. God knows I’ll be there. (However, I
won’t be singing ’80s karaoke. I have a very, very good reason for not
doing so; it has to do with an incident involving a car break-in and
The B-52’s song “Love Shack.” Long, unfortunate story.)

Hope to see you there. In the meantime, enjoy this week’s fantastic
issue.

  1. Oh- 1984. The Weekly was kind enough to publicize our 1984 party on Cardinal Ave.

It was a giant jam, remember the Boomers, Mr.Calm and the Willies, White Guys (play the blues)?

I had made 180 Winston Smith stick on labels for people who came in. They disappeared in about 1/2 hour. The house and yard suddently was full of people doing the 1984 than’g.

The party- including five or more bands and numerous jams, went on into the morning (in the county they gave us a break) when some other friends from the rez came around 4:00 am they did a 49’er in our house. An honor I never forget. Then everyone went to sleep on all our prepared for sleep floors because we weren’t sending anyone home after this blow out. Thanks to the Weekly for telling people about our blues barbecues (we were not the only ones, but we did quite a few- all hail Foster and Bonnie!!!)
We ended up with 450 plus people at the 1984 party, banners all around the house with 1984 quotations. In the morning we went up and down our street for a mile total picking up cardboard 12 pack containers.. But not one accident, that’s probably because I made about 200 people sleep all over the house floors. 1984 always meant a lot to me before this date, but the party was an anarchist rebellion, don’t ever forget what 1984 stands for..
