Nearly 30 Democratic U.S. House members plan to introduce a resolution censuring their Arizona Republican colleague Rep. Paul Gosar for social media posts that depicted him killing New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
On Sunday, Gosar tweetedย from both his official and personal accounts and posted on Instagram a video showing an anime sequence with the faces of Gosar, Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden superimposed over original characters. The character with Gosarโs face swings swords at Ocasio-Cortez and Biden.
The censure resolutionโs lead sponsor, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), said in a Thursday statement the group would introduce the resolution at the House pro forma session Friday.
A censure resolution needs majority approval in the House. According to the Congressional Research Service, the lawmaker being censured also generally stands in the well of the House to receive a verbal rebuke and to hear a reading of the resolution. It is not as severe a sanction as expulsion.ย The last member to be censured by the House, in December 2010, was Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat.
Nine Democrats in addition to Speier are listed as primary co-sponsors of the Gosar resolution. That group includes U.S. Reps. Jim Cooper of Tennessee, Brenda Lawrence and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Nikema Williams of Georgia.
In a statement, the members called the posts created using official government resources โa clear-cut case for censure,โ and criticized House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy for allowing such rhetoric in his conference.
โAs the events of January 6th have shown, such vicious and vulgar messaging can and does foment actual violence,โ the members said, referring to the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
โViolence against women in politics is a global phenomenon meant to silence women and discourage them from seeking positions of authority and participating in public life, with women of color disproportionately impacted. Minority Leader McCarthyโs silence is tacit approval and just as dangerous.โ
Ocasio-Cortez responded to the video in her own series of tweets Monday after arriving at the United Nations Climate Conference in Scotland. She also criticized McCarthy.
โSo while I was en route to Glasgow, a creepy member I work with who fundraises for Neo-Nazi groups shared a fantasy video of him killing me,โ she wrote. โAnd heโll face no consequences bc @GOPLeader [McCarthy] cheers him on with excuses.
โFun Monday! Well, back to work bc institutions donโt protectโ women of color.
In a Tuesday statement, Gosar defended the video.
โI do not espouse violence or harm towards any Member of Congress or Mr. Biden,โ he said. โThe video depicts the fight taking place next week on the House floor and symbolizes the battle for the soul of America.โย
Gosar has since deleted the posts including the video. Tweets defending the video remained online.
One tweetย included a meme with the caption, โItโs a cartoon. Relax.โ
A spokesman for Gosar did not return a message seeking comment Thursday.
Additional cosponsors of the resolution include U.S. Reps. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio Debbie Dingell of Michigan, Steve Cohen of Tennessee, Dwight Evans of Pennsylvania, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Raul Grijalva, the dean of Arizonaโs delegation.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also has called for an investigation of the video by the House Ethics Committee and law enforcement.

There is an on-going battle in Washington D.C. to determine if one man is above the law, and now another man, cut from the same cloth, is pushing the envelope to see if he too can get away with something that virtually no person in government or private business could get away until now. Perhaps he will use this to demonstrate how the “freedoms” of white men are under attack, or perhaps he is just being a sophomoric dick.
We are seeing this pattern over and over again and it does not seem to be going anywhere soon — the outrage and rage mongering of every demographic out there: right or left, liberal and conservative, pro and con. The normal restraints have been lifted and everyone is sounding like the character Sidney Lumet from the movie “Network” — “I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take this anymore!”
Capitalizing on outrage and rage is easy enough, but once the genie is out of the bottle no one seems to know how to put it back again until it just burns out on its own and the damage is done.
We are seeing this in America at an acute rate and the toll it has taken on the country and its people is threatening to bring down the walls on our collective heads.
Unfortunately, those that are using it to achieve power do not care about the collateral damage to American or its people. I guess they figure once they are in power, they will fix everything, but that’s hard to do when you’ve burned down the country to “save it.”
The future will not wait for us to come to our senses. The world is literally burning up and around the world oppressive governments and soul-less corporations are feeding the flames. It is time to set childish squabbles for king of the hill aside and start working together to achieve a livable future for America and the world, or we can continue on our present path to an apocalyptic ending that sees the white-columned buildings of Washington eroding away like the ruins of ancient Rome.
People who elected this walking chunk of puke would love to see anarchy and the disruption of our democracy. My question to them is: Then what? Wait in long lines like they do in Russia to possibly get a bag of potatoes before the truck leaves? Watch our roads deteriorate into potholes? Find that Grandma no longer receives her Social Security check and now has to beg in the street? Watch as we devolve into civil war? Actually, they’d love that part. They can use their assault rifles to kill those that don’t agree with them.
