Update – This just in from Downtown Tucson Partnership:

I have a little more info on the power outage. It’s only west of Stone Avenue. Downtown businesses are open east of Stone. Downtown is still accessible via Congress east of 6th Ave and Broadway, and people who want to access downtown can avoid all of the outages by parking at Centro Garage or Pennington Street Garage.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

This just came in from Tucson Police:

Traffic Alert: We advise motorists to avoid travel to the Downtown area if at all possible. There are power outages and no estimated time frame for the power to be restored at this time. TEP is on the way to assess and address the problem.

So if you can help it, stay out of downtown. We’ll try to update you as soon as something comes in.

  1. Traffic lights completely out (not even flashing red) at Church & Pennington, Church & Broadway. Lots of firetrucks (at least 4) have Congress just E of Church cordoned off – but traffic on Church can still get through that intersection.

  2. Per Tucson PIO Luke Knipe on Facebook:
“Luke Knipe Yeah, this bit of bad luck owes to a truck that knocked down a pole near 6th and 22nd, which downed a few power lines, which knocked out the power to several traffic signals and about 600 TEP customers. . . .

  3. They’re gonna start callin’ Tucson “The Circuit Breaker.”

As a city, we are so unprepared for the calamities coming. Really sad, it’s not as if we weren’t warned.

  4. As we later found out, the 22nd Street incident was separate from the blown out manhole cover Downtown, Luke.
