Well, it’s about time and of course, it hasn’t happened yet but because of some missing greyhounds (100-200), our state Department of Racing has decided to do an investigation—but of course, there is no deadline for when that investigation will be done.
Don’t worry Mr. Racing Commissioner: We greyhound adopters will be hounding you about it (pun intended).
Missing? How can 100-200 greyhounds go missing? The greyhound racing industry in general has a history of missing greyhounds. Missing greyhounds turn up in research laboratories or veterinarian schools, or simply vanish into the desert or remote areas to fend for themselves or be used as target practice. While they are zealously tracked by their ear tattoos during their racing career, they fall off the radar the minute they lose their last race.
My questions for the Department of Racing are: How often do you currently inspect Tucson Greyhound Park? What do you inspect it for? Where are those findings posted? When was the last time you inspected it? What did you find?
If you have the stomach for it, here’s a partial list of greyhound abuses through the years.
Just this week 35 greyhounds in Oregon died from heat exhaustion when the Curtis Washburn kennel’s A/C went on the blitz and no one was around to notice. Last week, Pima Animal Care Center picked up a badly neglected greyhound that did not come from any of the local rescue groups but coincidentally from the Washburn Kennel. The greyhound is being held at PACC pending a criminal investigation and then will go to a local rescue group for adoption.
I will stop blogging about greyhound abuse when the abuse stops.

Kudo’s Karyn! It’s about time is right….. You want the list of dogs from the January haul that went missing? Registered names , tatoo’s etc…. Post that too….. TGP got away with arranging the haul Jesse Burges got all the heat for …You know the one that went to Juarez and some dogs died….TGP didn’t get any heat, and it was the racing office staff that OVER Loaded that trailor…Jesse was just the hauler ..There are so many things the public does not know about TGP… TGP arranged the hauls for all these lost hounds..And they have been very secretive when asked and even told those dogs are not where you said they went……Now for god’s sake someone make them accountable …. There are alot of us that want to know where those hounds are….And TGP along with Rick Favreau need to BOTH be held accountable for this…The AZ State office better step up to the plate this time unlike in the past where they have protected their own and slid everything under the carpet….I have alot to say .I could go on forever on the Blunders and attrocities in Tucson….And I very well may ….I am watching AZ state very closely…Let me know if you want to know what I do……Conversations with Tony, Weasel, kennel owners, lead outs, staff members,kennel help, state officials at TGP, dead dogs… Injuries….and worse….You name it, it’ll come up in Tucson…..
I am really wanting to see if AZ State actually steps up to the plate on this one… Where are the 30 injured, that’s right a whole 30 dog load of injured dogs that Rick took in the middle of the night out of TGP.. Dec 2005 , dogs TGP was responsible for…..What Colorado group so generously took in those 30 injured dogs!!!!! I personally want to kiss the ground they walk on….
And where are the 30 dogs who left in January with Rick….Some listed below….Which group has those….Even the kennel owner wants to know that …Neither TGP or Rick could account for them either….The list is long….Hundreds of dogs…..Where are they ???? Turn Your eyes to TGP ask them!!!! Where are these dogs!!!! Then ask the State of AZ…

TUCSON GREYHOUND PARK: THE JUDAS GOAT
We must start asking the difficult questions: Who/Where/What/When/Why
Who is responsible, where are the laws that protect our Greyhounds, and
where are those who would enforce them? Why have the officials at Tucson
Greyhound Park refused to answer questions concerning their involvement?
Greyhound owners have the right and responsibility to sue this track
for releasing Greyhounds that require an owner’s signed statement. Forging
such a statement is against the law. There are laws governing the practice
of turning animals over to Research facilities and according to the
Freedom of Information Act, must comply with the rules. There has always
existed an ‘unhealthy alliance’ between the Racing industry and
FORT COLLINS — The dog racing industry is using Colorado State University’s
veterinary school as a dumping ground for thousands of greyhounds that are
used for practice surgeries or postmortem for other training.
I am very much concerned that the Greyhound hauler here is the
JUDAS GOAT at TGP. This can be affirmed or
rejected by the University with information required by Law.
The state permanently revoked the license of kennel owner Larry Carlson of Pueblo about a month ago after the state verified complaints by owners that he had turned over dogs to CSU without obtaining the owner’s permission. That was the first case to surface during the 15 years CSU has used racing greyhounds, officials said.

This story is appalling enough. Regrettably, it’s far from the only tale in the recent news of incomprehensible cruelty and deceit. I’m a NYer, and an honorary canine. I can only encourage some enterprising reporter(s) in AZ to cover the story, rather than expect an official inquiry to deliver justice. After all, the state greyhound-racing commission is by definition compromised: they owe their jobs to the continued existence of any dispassionate observer would recognize as a cruel industry and a savage entertainment.
On the AZ Daily Star http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/139585.php, I noticed there were 43 comments to the article about the Tucson Greyhound Park’s investigation. Many of the comments are from racing crackpots and PR flacks probably subsidized the by National Greyhound Association (which is the racing industry).
One of the comments mentioned the Global Greyhounds website which I never knew existed and took a cursory look around and its tagline is – where greyhounds are bought and sold – which almost made me lose my lunch.
Yesterday I woke up thinking that it was June 30 that I received a tip that 60 greyhounds disappeared from the Tucson Greyhound Park. A month has gone by and track personnel told me that every month 30 to 80 greyhounds are always ready to roll or to use track lingo (graded off).
I wonder since the Track is under an alleged State investigation, are they going to grade off more greyhounds to parts unknown this month (i.e. business as usual) or will they actually put some effort into getting the hounds to adoption groups far and wide?
So far the tattoos of the missing greyhounds have been posted on numerous listserves and media venues (see comment #1) and no one or no group has come forth to say – “Hey, we have those dogs!”
The practice of dumping greyhounds is not a new one. I did a Google search on the name mentioned in comment one — Rick Favreau — and unfortunately I found an article from 1999 where he and others transported hundreds of greyhounds to their death at research laboratories.

By turning a blind eye, the racing industry condones these heinous practices.
Kudos to your blog – I’m sick of the abuses perpetrated by the greyhound racing industry in the name of the almighty dollar. The racing industry needs to be made to answer for the cruelty they allow to exist every single day. It’s disgusting.

Report on the stewards hearing for Colorado hauler Rick Favreau, who is under investigation by the Arizona Department of Racing (ADOR) for the 100-200 greyhounds missing from Tucson Greyhound Park. The Arizona Department of Racing Board of Stewards convened a hearing for Favreau at 12:30 pm. Favreau, who represented himself, attended the hearing via telephone. ADOR investigator John Parkey read his investigative report into the record, making reference to the complaint filed with the department by the Greyhound Protection League. Parkey and Chief Steward Bryan Stoyer questioned Favreau at length for more than an hour, but Favreau was unable to provide verifiable information about the whereabouts of approximately 192 greyhounds.
Favreau confirmed to the board of stewards that he had an agreement with Chris McConnell, general manager of Tucson Greyhound Park, to remove the dogs from the track, for which he was paid $150 per dog. When asked where he took the dogs, Favreau mentioned one Colorado adoption group, and said took some dogs back to their owners and gave many others away to individuals numerous states, but could not provide contact information for any of the individuals.
The hearing was continued to Wednesday, Oct. 18, to allow Favreau time to provide the racing department with documentation of the whereabouts of the missing greyhounds.
SNIFFING OUT THE PAPER TRAIL
All of these legal requirements can be gotten around by good & bad people for a variety of reasons. Do you know of any? Have been an owner (with familiarity of those papers & NGA requirements). Have worked in the kennels (with familiarity of leasing contracts & track requirements) Have worked on the farms (with familiarity of tattoo and the registering of litters). I am asking WHERE/WHY/WHO because by law this paper trail exists. Where is it? And it’s ILLEGAL to forge them anyhere/anyway along the PAPER TRAIL line.

The Stewards hearing involving Richard Favreau was conducted today

It is unclear why there are no laws that forces information as to where
these missing Greyhounds are, and what this JUDAS GOAT Favreau has
done with them to his profit. It is unclear why these Greyhounds were
given over to this neanderthal scumbag with a known reputation for
dirty dealing. It is unclear, through all the tears of all those that
love the Greyhounds why these poor innocents suffer so much at the hands of
those whose care is guaranteed them by so many laws based on decency
and caring people dedicated to their safety.
One small step for profit, one giant step backward for all that has
been lost here. These innocents remain in our hearts and prayers.

Greyhound adoptions called bogus, spark suit

A former owner of greyhound racing dogs has accused an Iowa man of
pretending to adopt more than 1,000 dogs, then selling them for
medical experiments.
George Panos, who raced greyhounds out of a kennel in Hudson, Wis.,
said in a lawsuit filed Friday that he donated 15 to 20 greyhounds to
Daniel Shonka of Cedar Rapids from 1998 to 2001.
Panos said he was led to believe that Shonka and his organization,
Greyhound Adoption of Iowa, would place the retired racing dogs with
loving families.
As part of his marketing, Shonka sent greyhound owners “brochures
that featured a picture of a retired racing greyhound with its front
paws perched on a smiling boy’s shoulders,” according to the lawsuit
filed in Cook County Circuit Court.
Instead, Shonka sold the dogs to a medical research firm in St. Paul,
Minn., for an estimated $400 to $500 each, the lawsuit alleges.
The firm used the dogs for medical tests, implanting them with
cardiac devices such as pacemakers, the lawsuit said. The dogs were
then euthanized.
The lawsuit filed Friday alleges that Shonka made about $500,000 over
three years from the operation.
Shonka could not be reached Friday for comment.
In 2003, Shonka pleaded no contest to two counts of theft in St.
Croix County, Wis., for selling dogs for medical research without
their owners’ consent, according to Wisconsin Department of Justice
officials.
A judge in Wisconsin sentenced Shonka to 9 months in jail and 4 years
of probation and ordered him to pay restitution, fines and court
costs totaling $110,000.
Panos said in the lawsuit that he raced greyhounds from 1991 to 2001
at St. Croix Meadows dog track in Hudson. Panos hopes to bring the
suit as a class action on behalf of about 1,000 dog owners who he
said donated dogs.

Tucson Greyhound Park is worse. Truck loads of healthy, the lame, injured Greyhounds were

between Arizona and Colorado. Does anyone know what happened to them? Where they are? Let us hope that ARIZONA will “STEP UP,” for
the Greyhounds. At least these Alabama Greyhounds got to go ‘home again’, they are not under the
grass or at a Research Lab. The plot has been discovered and the perpetrators will be punished.
ALABAMA did “STEP UP.” Licenses have been totally revoked, these neanderthals are going to jail where they belong.
The law has dealt with them.
TEXAS did “STEP UP.” Daniel Shonka went to jail.

R19-2-329. Disposition of Greyhounds
A. Racing kennels, breeding farms, or other operations shall maintain a log as to the disposition of individually registered greyhounds at the end of their breeding, racing, or nonracing careers. The log shall include
1. Greyhound names
2. Left and right ear tattoo numbers
3. Name of owners/lessees
4. Date career ended and reason why
5. Destination
B. Every effort shall be made to adopt the greyhounds not use for racing, or breeding purposes.
C. Greyhounds transported to an adoption agency, breeding farm, or other location at the end of their breeding, racing, or nonracing careers shall be subject to the transportation rules as set forth in R19-2-328.
AN OPEN LETTER TO RICHARD FAVREAU
You are no big deal.
You’re just a little, slimy person that thought you could get away with these dirty deeds. And perhaps you have, but not for long. You’ll be singled out, weeded out, rotted out. You’ll be long gone and so will your profit.
What your able counsel and what the equally able Arizona Board of Racing investigators have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific. You are entitled to your day in court. You are presumed innocent until proven guilty. You need to stand up and tell the truth. You need to expose those who would repeat these heinous acts. I repeat, until you can prove your innocence you will be a blight upon everything that is decent and moral in a human being. What was it that led you here to this courtroom today?
I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable evil led you to do what you are guilty of and admit you are guilty of doing. If it is within you to clear your name then I invite you to do so. Your silence condemns you. And I have an answer for you. It may not satisfy you, but as I search this entire record, it comes as close to understanding as I know.
It seems to me you hate the thing that to us is most precious; the love we bear to these innocent Greyhounds, and the love of your own pitiful sense of profit.
You hate our freedom to prosecute you, to discover and uncover your guilt. You can prove otherwise by explaining your actions. These unsuspecting Greyhounds probably wagged their tails at you as you loaded and unloaded them from your hauling truck. I can only hope that you will continue to come before other Judges and that you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
We all know that the way we treat you is the measure of our own liberties. Make no mistake though. Look around you. Mark it well. The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here.
Day after tomorrow, it will be forgotten, but this, however, will long endure. You are a scourge to society and everything decent in this industry that well-meaning people have attempted to elevate.
When you decide to tell the truth is when it will be asked on your behalf for the Lord to have mercy on your soul. Meanwhile it would seem you are far safer here on earth, than in Heaven.

THE LOST SHEEP of TGP
We are a kingdom divided against itself.
If only those who know would come forward then we could say: The
Greyhounds we have been searching for are no longer missing. But no.
We could say: They were lost and now are found. But no.
They are in our hearts and saddened, we will never stop looking for
them. Left behind are all of us who mourn them, each of us our own
best messenger to console the others. We mourn that they did not
receive the world of love and joy that so many others have found thru
their adoptive families.
We mourn the beauty and joy that was theirs to give, and await
finding them.
Crimes against these innocents remain a moral revolution that has
not yet been reached or answered. It is an easy task to trace the
uneasy stages of these developments. Laws are required together
with a willingness to confront the complexities of collective
problems in whatever environment they are found … Laws that
do not require a PRO or ANTI stance against Greyhound Racing. The
Racing industry must answer to this urgent question. There must
be a moral and legal consideration, and finally retribution.
We are a kingdom divided against itself, binding on us all. Our
good works do not stretch far enough when we save those few while
a truck hauls away those who are sacrificed.
We must deal with and end the code of silence that is a rotting
cancer upon the Industry that inhibits and intimidates us away from
being our best selves and keeps us hostage to its evil.
Eighty prisoners can overcome a single driver. JUST SAY NO.
STEP UP AND SAY NO, YOU WILL NOT TAKE THEM.
We cannot be consoled with obscure phrases and superficial
promises. And everytime the code of silence kicks in, we are looking
the other way and become a part of it.
