Marana Mayor Ed Honea: “These will be challenging times for everyone, but if we work together to follow these recommended actions to reduce the spread of the virus, we can ensure a brighter future for everyone.” Credit: Courtesy Photo

Marana Mayor Ed Honea has declared an emergency within the town, but is not calling for restaurants and bars to only offer takeout service and is not asking gym to close. Instead, he is calling on business owners to establish guidelines for social distancing.

“The safety and well-being of our entire community is of the utmost priority and concern for the Town of Marana,” said Mayor Ed Honea. “These will be challenging times for everyone, but if we work together to follow these recommended actions to reduce the spread of the virus, we can ensure a brighter future for everyone.”

Here’s the declaration:

Public gathering places, such as bars, clubs, libraries, gyms, and other places where groups in excess of ten congregate, are asked to take measures to implement social distancing; and
All restaurants, food courts, cafes, coffeehouses, retail food facilities, and other similar businesses and establishments are asked to take measures to implement social distancing, and increase the use of delivery service, window service, drive-through service, or drive-up service, and to use precautions in doing so to mitigate the potential transmission of COVID‑19, including social distancing; and

Members of the public are urged to:

use social distancing and avoid groups of ten or more people; and
avoid contact with those with elevated risks associated with COVID-19; and
stay home and contact your medical provider if you or others in your household feel sick; and
stay home and away from other people if you are an older person or you have a serious underlying condition that can put you at increased risk, for example, a condition that impairs your lung or heart function or weakens your immune system; and
practice good personal hygiene, such as regularly washing your hands, avoid touching your face, sneezing into a tissue or the inside of your elbow, and frequently disinfecting.

  1. This doesn’t make sense, that the mayor of Tucson shuts certain businesses down to help in the controlling of this virus and then just a few blocks away the Marana mayor says a completely different thing. We are the same community and have to be on the same page and be socially responsible .

  2. This is a mistake. People are not listening to recommendations. Bars & restaurants were jammed packed today. Your basically killing your constituents. And I’ll tell you this, if someone gets my dad sick you’re gonna have a problem.

  3. The program existed long before: wash your darn hands, stay home when sick, and not every sore throat is the flu or COVID-19. Use some darn gosh sense. Tired of hearing all this crum as a healthcare professional. Did you get your flu shot!?

  4. Keep him home. Anyone over 60y/o is advised to stay home. So easy enough, listen to CSC guideline and State guidelines

  5. Marana has a lot of small businesses and I’m sure by closing for 2 weeks will hurt the economy and have lay-offs of employees. Beside we use the drive-thru or carry out all the time.

  6. The mayor of Marana will soon learn how serious this virus is. While we could all take a break and enjoy family time this weak leader decides to keep places open and continue the spread. Let me enlighten you guys. There are already a bunch of cases that are not reported. Give it a few days and rest assured we will have a huge problem around here.

  7. I will not hit a drive through at any Marana restaurant that has an open dining room as that will be a hotbed of virus.

  8. 1st off committing economic suicide because of a flu virus (not even close to Spanish Flu) and is looking even less so than the influenza B, is beyond insane. Why anybody would want to return to the 2008 global financial crisis or any semblance of that is insane. Since when does the worries or needs of the few outweigh the many, and by many that means economy, multiple industries, university students, and the insane ripple effect through our economy that is extremely damaging?

Also, it is clear that people have blown this way out of proportion, as if Y2K and the communist red scare met social media, and thus here we are. That’s more serious than any flu virus that we’re long past being able to contain so roll out the vaccines, and get on with life and repairing the damage we’ve already done by being selfish and worried about each other. It’s clear society isn’t worried about anyone but themselves because when things seem rough it’s every man for themselves and to hell with the next person.

  9. He’s thinking about money first and foremost.
No, I won’t close businesses… I won’t take into consideration the health of my constituents… but I’ll damn sure call a state of emergency so I can reap the benefits of the government!
