There’s a new shaved-ice store under construction in the former home of Copper Kettle Popcorn at 3701 W. Ina Road.
The new owners have put up white paper in the windows proclaiming that Shoobies Shaveice—that’s how it reads on the sign—cometh to rock our shaved-ice worlds, but no opening date or other details were in sight.
I tried to corner who I thought was Shoobie coming out of the store this afternoon, but he denied any affiliation and looked a little scared, so I took this picture and ran off.

This article appears in May 19-25, 2011.

It reads “shave ice” on the sign because that’s how it is said in the mother country – Hawai’i. Not shaved ice – shave ice! Except on the Big Island, where shave ice is known as Ice Shave. Whutevah!
Where is the story here Adam?
Shave ice is correct and a quick search you can find many successful Shave Ice business’s along with the history of “Shave Ice”.
I hope their Shave Ice is like it was on the North Shore of Oahu!
The story is that a new shave ice store is opening, and perhaps someone might like to eat there.
Glad to hear shave ice is correct. I was just pointing out that it is actually how it is spelled on the sign and not a typo on my part. As you can tell – even from your own comment – people pay attention to this sort of thing.
For some reason, at first sight of that sign, I swore it said, “Show boobies, Shaved Ice”. I was thinking, what a great marking plan, a topless shaved iced place.
We are excited to see that our little shave ice shack is getting some notice. We are the owners of Shoobies Shave Ice, and no it is not a topless shave ice joint. Shoobies is actually surfer slang for any person who looks out of place while at the beach. Usually identified by the wearing of black party socks with shorts and flip-flops and/or a severe sunburn. We thought this quite fitting for a shave ice shack in the middle of the desert. We hope to open sometime in June we will keep you posted.
