Al Perry, the legendary local cowpunk, tells us he’s playing a long set tonight at The Hut, at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street. We’ll be there! And we’re hoping he’ll dedicate “We’ve Got Cactus” to us.

Also, it’s First Friday Shorts at the Loft Cinema, where anybody can bring in their homemade movies. Two reasons to go see why TW named it Best Local Film Event: It’s hosted by none other than “Red Meat” cartoonist Max Cannon–and you can drink beer.

  1. Al Perry is the guy who introduced me to “Pet Sounds,” Ernest Noyes Brookings (outsider music), American Sound Poems, and tons of other terrific music. Thanks for the tapes, Al! Need a ride? Want some water? Why do I always see you walking around when I’m driving near downtown? (Whoops….flashback to 1994…)

  2. Oh man, I almost forgot: Al Perry made me a tape of a country/truckstop singer named David Allen Coe. His songwriting triumphs include “Cumstains on my Pillow” and “Don’t Bite the Dick…” (partial title…the rest is too nasty to type).

If you need to laugh hard, listen to David Allen Coe.

  3. Speaking of funny country music, check out Ween’s album of country tunes. Ween is normally a rock band, but for one album they put on their 10-gallon hats and kicked ass with spurs on.

The best song is “Piss Up a Rope,” and I *STRONGLY* recommend you buy or legally download or otherwise obtain this tune — on lyrics alone, nevermind that it’s a catchy tune.
