Clearly we’ve written quite a bit about The Great Cover Up, but that’s because it’s awesome, and you should go.

The Tucson Weekly is all over this thing as a sponsor and is connected to some of the organizers in one way or another, but tonight, you get an extra dose of the Weekly, with Jimmy Boegle and Jim Nintzel helping host the festivities at the Rialto.

The bands only play for 20 minutes a piece, so if you don’t like one, another band is right around the corner, and they’ll all be better cover bands than these guys:

Tonight’s lineup, below the cut:

Doors at 5:30
7:00 — The Opposables
7:30 — Monster Pussy
8:00 — Still Life Telescope
8:30 — The Electric Blankets
9:00 – Break Up Party
9:30 — Jeremy Michael Cashman
10:00 — Top Dead Center
10:30 — Michael P
11:00 — Fourkiller Flats
11:30 — American Android
12:00 — Ghost of 505
12:30 — The Monitors
1:00 — HAIRSPRAYFIREANDGIRLS

Covering in no particular order: The Allman Brothers, Deftones, The Who, Sheryl Crow, Jimi Hendrix, Beat Happening, Depeche Mode, Dean Martin, John Mayer, Cake, The Alkaline Trio, Roxy Music, Black Sabbath

One night is $8; two nights are $12; see all three nights for $15 and get a commemorative poster. The nights at the Rialto are all ages, Friday night at Congress is 21 and over.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. Seriously, you guys put Top Dead Center in the list and you didn’t mention that Grateful Dead would be covered? Seriously???

  2. Props to whoever is covering Alkaline Trio.

The cover ups are always BORING imho because most of the bands, for some strange reason, all pick old time crooners, top 40, and 70s and 80s bands to cover. john mayer and sheryl crow for reals? the other nights aren’t much better the only interesting cover look to be Diamanda Galas & The Misfits. last night pretty much the same except phil collins has been added whooo boy. $50 bucks calexico does X.

  3. Dan don’t you work for the sponsor and with the two emcees? I gotta believe you have inside info. I won’t take your bet, but it appears I am wrong for you seem so sure of it. Oh yeah maybe Calexico already covered X at a previous cover up lol must be flaming lips then.

Hope you aren’t mad about my comment. It was directed at the bands and their choices not you. If I never listened to those bands (mayer, crow, etc) to begin with I have no interest in seeing their songs covered either. shrugs.

Will you relay my props to the artist covering alkaline trio? A few more bands exploring outside of the radio and I might have decided to go.

  4. Actually, Dan doesn’t have inside info. He does have info that’s been broadcast to all the world, though: Calexico is doing The Flaming Lips to conclude the Cover-Up. See the event’s Facebook page for info. As for Dan being mad … nope, it’s all good, bullseye. All in good fun.
