After watching Republicans John McCain, J.D. Hayworth and Jim Deakin go after each other in tonight’s GOP Senate debate, it’s almost hard to believe they’ll be back in the ring tomorrow here in Tucson. Remember, political junkies: The show airs at 7 p.m. on Channel 6, KUAT-TV.
Here are the GOP Senate Debate Drinking Game Rules for Saturday’s debate:
• Every time that Hayworth mentions the word “amnesty,” take a drink.
• Every time that McCain mentions the words “Huckster” or “earmarks,” take a drink.
• Every time that Jim Deakin mentions the U.S. Constitution, take a drink.
Here’s a release from Democrat Rodney Glassman, who is one of four Democrats who want a shot at McCain’s seat, on the incumbent’s performance:
U.S. Senator John McCain repeatedly said during a Republican primary debate tonight that facts are stubborn things.
Regrettably, he couldn’t be more right.
Here are some stubborn facts:
Fact: John McCain once believed in sensible and workable immigration reform and now opposes it.
Fact: John McCain once favored deficit-bursting tax cuts on the rich and now opposes them.
Fact: John McCain suspended his presidential campaign to make sure the Toxic Asset Relief Program (TARP) was approved but now opposes it.
Fact: John McCain once called himself a maverick and now says he never was.
Fact: John McCain once presented himself as a statesman above politics and now
presents himself as a typical three-decade, flip-flopping Beltway insider.
Fact: John McCain has consistently ignored Arizona while calling himself the world’s senator.
Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate Rodney Glassman pledges these facts, “I will serve Arizona, put the state back to work, address the immigration mess and lift Arizona from dead-last in classroom spending so our kids can once again dream about competing in the global market.”
“It’s unfortunate that John McCain continues to run away from himself,” said Glassman. “It’s what happens when a senator fails to serve the state that sent him to Washington and finds himself exposed, even in his own party. Arizona needs a senator that will stand up for the people of Arizona and not lay down for narrow interests and rigid ideologies.”
This article appears in Jul 15-21, 2010.

Glassman doesn’t like the facts either.
Fact: He was a registered Republican.
Fact: He doesn’t believe in gay marriage.
Fact: Glassman was the sole vote to shut down Access Tucson.
and that’s nothing compared to what you can find on him here:

A lot of people believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Does that alone diminish their capability to know what’s right or wrong? I was an Independent then switched to Democrat. Does that make me less capable of knowing about important issues facing this country? Your link only proves that you are a known NON supporter of Rodney Glassman. At every turn you’re blogging about what’s ‘wrong’ about Mr. Glassman instead of who you believe is your choice for senator. Guess I’ll see you at another Arizona website reading your same talking points. *sigh
Hey Whoknu,
Regardless of your interpretation of the meaning behind Math Dude’s link, the facts he listed remain.
Whether anyone likes those facts or not is a different issue.
I will tell you that I have very deep concerns about Glassman’s fitness for office. I believe Rodney is all about style and has virtually ZERO substance.
However, I won’t leave it at that. It’s most clear to me that the ONLY Democratic candidate for US Senate that can both take the heat and take the fight to McCain is the candidate that’s been studying and writing about him for decades. The only candidate that exposed McCain’s dubious dealings with Charles Keating. The only candidate that has the tenacity and veracity that it will take to win the race. And besides that, he’s the only candidate with VISION, who can lead on the issues that will take Arizona and America to a sustainable, renewable energy economy.
That candidate is John Dougherty.

McCain and Hayworth compete to be the most ridiculous flip-flop, deceitful, GOP mush-mouths. If Glassman’s comments are heard in the same context as in this truthful little piece, he stands a chance.
More truth, less mush, please.
A Registered Independent
BTW 2U down below, Access Tucson was mostly an unwatchable mass of mush. I do not know one sane person who chose to watch it on a regular basis. A waste of bandwidth.
HD-TV preferred for our money, thank you.
What was interesting about the “debate” is that AZ Public Media’s Buckmaster didn’t ask the candidates about the racism and nativism embedded in the immigration issue such as that reported by Michelle Price:
“Man With Neo-Nazi Ties Leading Patrols In Arizona”
at:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/17/m…
Had he asked pointed, specific, and challenging questions of the three manipulative righty candidates, Buckmaster could have elicited some squirm. Maybe. Instead, Buckmaster asked vague and general questions — garbage in, garbage out. Buckmaster’s behavoir was pretty much what one would expect from a cowed State of Arizona bureaucrat. And, obviously, TW can’t be distracted by what Michelle Price reports…
Just a reminder to all that name-calling and racism (or anything close to it) will not be tolerated at TucsonWeekly.com. Thanks!
