I found Red Wagon Steak and Sub this weekend by following the smell of cheese steaks to Borderlands Brewing Company, which seems to have a different food truck in its parking lot every time I stop in. I took it as an omen and decided to spend an hour watching the sun set while dining on street food and sipping a small glass of Borderlands new Smoke and Irons ale.
When I walked up to the food truck’s window a guy inside was holding an adorable child while another guy stayed busy tidying the place up and cooking an order of deep-fried mozzarella sticks. I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and fries and was told it would be out in three minutes. It was. Actually, it might have been a little less than three minutes, which is downright impressive.
As far as street-side sandwiches go, it fulfilled the necessary criteria: It was hot, the bread was fresh, the contents were spicy thanks to a dash of hot-wing sauce and everything was held together by a decent amount of provolone cheese. The French fries were bountiful and salty and crispy. It was fast and tasty and not very expensive and pretty much the textbook version of good street eats.
There are also burgers, several turkey sandwiches, cheese steaks, onion rings and other things. If that makes your mouth water, there’s more on Red Wagon Steak and Sub here.

One thing that’s very, very clever and interesting about the food truck thing, Adam Borowitz, is that they don’t have to have expensive liquor licenses to do business, and yet serve up pretty darn good enough food. They need only cozy-up to those establishments that are so licensed. Nature finds a way?
Hint: Rather than have people click away from the TW’s website, you might want to slip the street address in YOUR post…..
Great Food-Great People and Decent Prices ~ Did I mention Great Sevice an all around Great Experience!!! Way to go Red Wagon
@Red Star: Good point. I find the food truck thing interesting for the very same reason. They seem to dodge many of the barriers to opening a small business – building permits, expensive infrastructure, liquor licenses, payrolls – with the end result of more good things for us to eat.
@SonoranWinds – they’re a food truck – they’re not in the same place everyday. That’s why you need to go to their Facebook page to find out where they are at.
I am so scared of “California Sauce”
And yes, I am back. Did you miss me Adam?
Strangely enough, yes, I totally missed you Burnie and hope you are well. How I ended up holding both yourself and Red Star in such high esteem is not yet clear, but that does not change the fact that it is true.
I heart borowitz (no frank ocean)
