Among the first public figures to call for Ed Supe John Huppenthal to resign are conservatives. The political distancing and damage control begins.
There’s Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce. As recently as a week ago, the Chamber loved Hupp. It actually created a new award to honor his support of the Common Core, known in Arizona as the College and Career Ready Standards. No more. The award has been withdrawn. In his condemnation of Huppenthal’s jaw-dropping blog comments, Hamer echoed Captain Renault in “Casablanca.”
“I am shocked. I am shocked and saddened,” Hamer said. “The comments that were posted should not be posted under any circumstances. I am in extreme pain over this conversation.”
The Chamber’s board will consider asking Huppenthal to step down, or at least withdraw from the election before the upcoming primary.
Then there’s Lisa Graham Keegan. When she was a Republican state senator, she shepherded through Arizona’s charter school law in 1994, then became Ed Supe in 1995. Since then, she’s been McCain’s education adviser during his presidential campaign and is currently a heavy hitter in Arizona’s “education reform” movement, working hand in glove with Craig Barrett, ex-CEO of Intel and Gov. Brewer’s right hand man on education.
Lisa Graham Keegan joined the call for Hupp to drop out of the election immediately, becoming an unlikely bedfellow with Andrew Morrill, president of the Arizona Education Association. She went on to say Huppenthal should resign.
They’re right. Hupp should pull out of the election and pack his superintendent bags sooner rather than later. I’ll save my list of reasons for another post.

Let the right wing bring down one of its own.
How about some input from the Governor about Huppenthal’s behavior…
I may be the only supporter of Thucydides in Tucson, but calls for his resignation are premature. There are still citizens of Arizona who believe in hard work and personal responsibility.
Lisa Graham Keegan on John Huppenthal: “You can’t hold the position of superintendent of schools and be saying things that sound disdainful of the people that you serve, you can’t do that.”
Why did she make such a tortured statement? Why did she say “sound disdainful” rather than just say, are disdainful?
It seems to me that Keegan and the Arizona Chamber are more bothered my the fact that Huppenthal was stupid enough to put in writing what he thinks, rather than being concerned that he actually thinks what he thinks.
Let’s remember that, during the primary election, the Arizona Republic editorialized that the Democratic candidate, Penny Kotterman, was the most qualified candidate running for Superintendent. But when the general election came around, the Republic endorsed Huppenthal.
This time, let’s register people to vote and get them to vote for the most qualified candidate: David Garcia, regardless of who the media endorses.
“Thucydides” the sock puppet (let’s call him what he is) mentioned nothing about the shame of corporate welfare, or the shameful incestuous relationship between private healthcare corporations, private corrections corporations and the governor’s office. He criticizes welfare for poor people but says nothing about stacking the deck for friends of Jan Brewer and her advisers. Huppenthal is a far-right wing Catholic fanatic, a hypocrite who never spent a day in public schools growing up, who lives in a far-right wing bubble of an alternate universe where FDR caused the depression. He is also a coward who didn’t have the stones to espouse his most extreme beliefs in public.
Mr. Huppenthal/Falcon09/Thucydides should heed Oliver Cromwell’s admonition to the Rump Parliament, ended with these words, which are, I believe, quite appropriate to him: “Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”
So let’s review just how someone who posted had his identity revealed?
@Fraser – maybe by all the praise he heaped upon himself. He left a trail of breadcrumbs meters wide….
Put him in the same room as brewer’s pedophile rapist son. Hi mom.
Congrats Logical Thinker! With one like and 18 dislikes it appears that you and the moron racist Hup are neither logical or thinkers. However, in your defense I suspect you are both being truthful in expressing your true disdain for the Hispanic people and common decency.

My apologies to logical thinker. I mistook your post for Phild.
I hope that Mr. Hamer’s pain is not fatal, but lasts long enough for his organization to look beyond the public facades of other Arizona officials. There is nothing like seeing what an elected official’s real beliefs and motivations are, to make it seem important to rededicate yourself to truth and integrity. Perhaps you could make it a requirement for the privilege of The Chamber’s support.
Huppenthal is just telling the truth and liberals can’t handle the truth. Spanish should not be spoken only English in the U.S.. Welfare should be regulated. Too many using the system. Also all the illegals should be deported.l
Hey phild,
Someone has to support Huppy…he hung up his jock strap just after his last wrestling match @ Salpointe. (Before the high school changed the name to Salpointe Catholic.). Sad thing is, this squirrel lost his nuts when he decided to post idiocy under an alias. At least you have some, phild. But he lost his nuts. So you can stop supporting this nut. Although the majority of the public have posted for his resignation, you stand by your man.
Danielle,
Do you tell the truth under an alias? You are like huppenthal…a real pendeja. Look it up, smarty. Monolinguists are narrow minded. We were required to take a foreign language at Salpointe high school in order to graduate. What language did Thucydides take while he was in high school @ Salpointe from ’68-’72? Do you know? I do. And he lived for years in a Spanish language area. More and more of the middle class in Arizona are going on welfare now, and some of them speak only English…(white skinned people). But, they are people. The problem with mono linguists, is, they see through rose colored glasses, and they equate the poor with skin color. If you were to see me and not hear my voice, (because’ I think I write and speak better English than you do, Danielle,) you would have me deported. Conservatives are all about god. Well, I can tell you that john huppenthal was asleep during sixth period religion class at Salpointe. (Catholic).
