Tesla and Tucson would make a good couple. Unfortunately, the electric car company is the pretty girl at the prom and Reno might hit the jackpot. Our sister periodical Inside Tucson Business has been all over this story like fruit flies on the banana in my kitchen.

According to Phoenix Business Journal:

Northern Nevada is the front runner to land Tesla Motors’ $5 billion electric battery factory, though the California automaker is still talking to Texas, Arizona and New Mexico officials about incentive packages for the 1,000-acre site selection.

Multiple business and political sources in the Phoenix area say the Reno area in northern Nevada is the odds-on favorite to land the Tesla plant, which would encompass as much as 10 million square feet and employ 6,500 workers. Those officials asked not to be identified.

A story earlier in the week that looked at Arizona sites said Tesla doesn’t want to be too close to a major metro and suggested the top Arizona site is near Eloy, with Phoenix’s agricultural West Valley the next most likely spot.

Local innovators Maker House, Solar City and Sparc Interactive media banded together and made this short video to inspire Tesla to invest in the Rusty Pueblo. The video highlights Tucson events, talents, locals and the city’s aesthetically pleasing backdrops that you can’t find elsewhere.

Feast your eyes and ears:

Disclaimer: That is not a real Tesla vehicle driving around Tucson.

Some of us feel that Tucson would be the best home for Tesla’s battery plant. We could use the job growth, and 6,500 jobs would be a good start. So, it would be fair to rename Tucson to Detroit if this electric auto manufacturer does decide to plant its seeds here?

  1. Not with idiots running Tucson now I would suggest them bring such a classy car factory here, they would some how try and turn it over to mexico.

  2. Love the initiative ! Great video and I hope Tesla gives this city a look – with our engineering base and tons of sunshine for battery solar recharging we could be a great location for them.

  3. Tucson lost that chance when AZ tried to push the ban gays shopping issue. Ca. companies and Silicon Valley in particular (Elon Musk is a an alumnus of SV) are quite liberal and open-minded in their world, as am I , being from Santa Cruz. Dead issue now, the guns thing and the “Aryanzona, it’s a dry hate,” thing will be an impediment to attracting many business and investors.

  4. No way they will compete with the under cuter china–IMO–
It will end up a huge dry hole of debt for whoever sponsors them and bends over with millions in incentives.
I hope I’m wrong but smell another solendra-ish or slim- fast.
They can’t compete with the screwed up unfair trade amongst our owners in china.

Just like the solar panels that were once produced here.

    Very Sad indeed

  5. we will never get Tesla here. Too many potholes, too many Mexican illegal aliens, too much crime, (see #2), too many Progressive who like business…should I go on?

  6. Tucson would be a perfect place for Tesla! With Apple coming to Arizona and the growth Potential of our tech parks. The stuff in the video only scratches the surface or reasons for them to come here. And that may not be a Tesla in the video but I’ve seen several in town.

  7. Let’s not forget that “business loving” Jan Brewer made it illegal to buy a Tesla in Arizona due to pressure from the auto dealers lobby. Why in the world would Tesla move here if you can’t buy a car here?
