This just in, from a TREO news release:

Target, one of the nation’s largest discount merchandise store chains, announces today that it will open a new fulfillment center in Tucson, Ariz. for its on-line business, Target.com. Target is in the process of finalizing agreements to purchase land along the I-10 corridor on the SE side of Tucson to build a brand new 975,000 square-foot facility. Operations are scheduled to begin in Spring 2009.

Specific employment numbers have not been announced by Target, but the facility’s capacity will provide employment opportunities for a significant number of team members. The locally-hired team members will manage and fulfill on-line merchandise orders. The new state-of-the-art facility will utilize the latest technology in distribution efficiencies.

  1. Just out of curiosity: How do Target’s employment policies rate compared to Wal-Mart’s? Is there any info out there about this? (Have you seen the documentary “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices?”)

  2. I read an article in the Star circa mid-2005 about their practices – I don’t remember if Target was better or equal to Wal-Mart.

What did impress me is that Kirkland, Wash.-based Costco gives its employees much better benefits than both — I think even some form of health insurance for even the most basic employees.

  3. Oh, boy! More minimum-wage jobs! Another coup for TREO, and proof that that the organization can attract more than just telemarketers! Wow, between this and In-N-Out, this cowtown is finally getting onto the map! Too bad there’s no reason for all those useless, over-educated UA grads to stick around.

  4. James Reel is so cynical. Hey Mr. Reel I still have print-outs I made from your “guide to classical music” series you wrote for the Arizona Daily Star. I am still getting around to some of those! It was probably the best beginners’ guide to classical I’ve come across. You explained everything in a way that made it less daunting to approach. So at least your over-education went to some good use.

As for Arizona and low-wage jobs I’m afraid this is a trend that is happening in much of the country. Now even the better minimum-wage jobs are moving to India. Call Microsoft tech support and see who you end up talking to. The sad thing is their tech support workers are better, more thorough, and more polite than their U.S. counterparts.
