I have made it a point to fess up about my heinous eating habits, which revolve around eating whatever is cheapest and closest. But I will not stand for uncooked French fries in my breakfast burritos. Do you hear me Mexican restaurants of greater Tucson?
If it says “potatoes” on the menu board then that is what should be in the burrito. Not, I REPEAT, not a handful of slimy, greasy French fries. For two mornings in a row this has occurred – at two different restaurants separated by a good amount of geographical area – and I can’t take it anymore. Nobody said this was o.k. It must stop immediately.
Until I am assured action is being taken on this front I am eating breakfast exclusively at Los Cuates at 1030 W. St. Mary’s Road. Terrible coffee, but real potatoes for all.
If you’ve got any other suggestions regarding decent breakfast burritos in the area, drop some info in the comments below. I’m bailing on Tucson in a couple of months and am trying to pack in as much decent Mexican food as I can before I leave.
This article appears in Oct 4-10, 2012.

There’s a lady that comes to the government complex at Bonita and Commerce Park Loop west of the freeway who has great burritos. $3 each.
Sweet Jesus. Don’t eat that crap, get out of bed and make something good. What is wrong with you. Don’t you care about your health? Cold bran flakes may not hit the spot, but your heart will thank you with a few years good health. BTW your sex life is not so good after a heart attack….
For a good one at fast food, I recommend Carl Jr’s breakfast burritos.
go ahead and bail. don’t let the burrito hit you on the ass on the way out of town. jeez, i couldn’t take another burger restaurant review. bacon, bacon, bacon=barf, barf, barf. this crappy food will only hurt you if you ever ate at a decent place.
St. Mary’s Tortilla Factory is solid
@patmanaz: Rest easy in the knowledge that you only have to put up with me for several more weeks. The irony? I was a vegetarian for many, many years and only started eating meat so I could do this job properly. In fact, I have only eaten meat in the course of reporting for this newspaper, and never enjoyed it. Yes, I compromised my morals to be a food writer. How sad is that?
So the NEWSPAPER killed you? Shame.
Adam,
I thought about applying for the job you are leaving behind, but alas, I too am a vegetarian. I do not think I could give it up for a job; maybe I could if all the food trucks and restaurants were at the MaFooCo level, but we all know they are not. Do you plan on returning to your vegetarian ways?
Maybe as the final coup de grâce of your Weekly employment you can do a run down/review on vegetarian options here in town.
Good luck in your future endeavors, fuck the haters and thanks for the good reviews.
Try Taqueria El Pueblito on Congress right across el rio health clinic. Best breakfast burritos in town!!
@HumanBean: I’m going vegan. Every time I eat meat I hear an animal scream in agony, a curse that has plagued me since childhood. I’ll make sure to roll out a list of good vegetarian options, many of which are at places you would never think offered such things.
@oscdlg: Taqueria El Pueblito does have killer breakfast burritos. Good call on that one!
Adam: Although I am heart broken at both; the news of your departure and horrendous past (and future) as a vegetarian (and vegan), I still thought to weight in on your burrito dilemma.
Without a doubt best breakfast burritos in town
CHACOS CAFE (Craycroft just south of 29th)
Also, POCO and MOMS is pretty good.
Fast food wise – BIG JUANS is where its at.
And honorable Mention, is that little shack on the corner of St Mary’s and Grande. I am unsure of the name, or if it even has a name, but the burritos are great.
Jesus H Christ. I worked for the Post Office for many years & on Saturdays we would order burritos from various Mexican restaurants and several ones had your UNCOOKED fries in place of “potatoes” . God I hated that. I always thought ” WTF” . How cheap and how stupid these places thought we were. We stopped ordering burritos on Sat mornings, but thanks for bringing it up, cos I was so pissed that these restaurants thought they could get away with it. Sorry that I couldn’t remember specific names.
