Tonight at 5:30 p.m., Southside Presbyterian Church, 317 W 23rd Street (10th Ave. and 23rd St.), will welcome Daniel Noyoy Ruiz with sanctuary. Ruiz is scheduled to be deported by ICE to Mexico at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14. If deported he will be separated from his wife and son.

On Tuesday, May 13 Daniel Neyoy Ruiz — a husband, father and Tucson resident for 14 years — is scheduled to be deported to Mexico by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Faith leaders and community advocates will gather at 5:30pm to welcome Daniel, his wife Karla, and 13-year-old son into Sanctuary at Southside Presbyterian Church, the church that began the public Sanctuary movement in the 1980s. In an effort to keep this local family together supporters and advocacy organizations are calling on Arizona Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials Jon Gurule, the Acting Field Office Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations, and Pat Vroom, Chief Counsel for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to administratively close Daniel Neyoy Ruiz’s case.

Daniel and his wife Karla came to Tucson 14 years ago as newlywed young adults. Their son was born in Tucson and is a U.S. citizen. A student at Challenger Middle School, he plans to study at the University of Arizona and dreams one day of becoming an immigration attorney so he can help mixed-status families like his

Three years ago Daniel was on his way to work when he was pulled over by Highway Patrol. Although Daniel was never issued a traffic citation, he was handed over to the Border Patrol, detained for one month and has remained in removal proceedings for the last three years.

Said attorney Margo Cowan, “Daniel’s case should have received prosecutorial discretion long ago. According to the Obama administration he is an ideal candidate for administrative closure. The fact that his case has progressed to the point where he is being ordered to remove himself from the U.S. clearly demonstrates that the cracks in the system are vast and that far too many families and communities are left to feel the pain and suffering caused by deportation.”
Daniel is a devoted family man, active church member, taxpayer, and worker who positively contributes to the Tucson community. Alison Harrington, Pastor of Southside Presbyterian Church, says, “Daniel is a reflection of the values that the Tucson community holds dear. Our church family will fight to ensure that he may continue to love and support his family and this community.”

Unless we act now, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will tear Daniel Neyoy Ruiz away from his wife and child.

  1. So he came here illegally, stole a job from an American construction worker, drove without a license or insurance in a car spewing pollution into the air. He married and had a child, knowing he could be deported at any time.
    He sucked off the American healthcare system (certainly neither he nor his family had health insurance and it costs about $15,000 just to have a hospital birth, let alone all the follow-up care and visits to the ER for flu, pneumonia, etc.).
    And he’s supposed to reflect the values the “Tucson community holds dear.”
    I’ve known an unemployed American construction worker or two who are also devoted family men and workers. They were replaced with illegal labor at less than half the wage and no benefits. But since they’re Americans, I guess they don’t reflect the values the “Tucson community holds dear.” Oh boy.
