Actress Maria Conchita Alonso did a commercial with the anti-immigration and Minutemen Project-affiliated California governor Tea Party candidate Tim Donnelly and the internets exploded—oh, and possibly Vagina Monologues‘ author Eve Ensler. Some have said a little bit of theater possibly died, too.
The result was that everyone forgot the name of the actress’s chihuahua. It’s Tequila by the way.
What was all the hoopla about? According to a CBS Channel 5 SF Bay Area report, Alonso was set to perform in a San Francisco Spanish-language production of the Vagina Monologues. But backlash from SF’s Latino community forced the actress to resign:
Donnelly has voiced strong views against illegal immigration and was once involved with the Minutemen Project, a group that patrolled the border with Mexico to catch immigrants coming across.
“Politicians and big government are killing our prosperity, pushing welfare costs through the roof and driving our schools into the ground,” Donnelly said in the ad.
Standing next to Donnelly, Alonso jokingly translated in Spanish, “We’re screwed.”
Alonso is an actress of Cuban and Venezuelan descent. She is perhaps best known for her role in the movie “Moscow on the Hudson” with co-star Robin Williams.
The actress was to perform next month at the Brava Theater Center in San Francisco’s Mission District in a Spanish-language version of “The Vagina Monologues,” scheduled for a run from February 14th through 17th. The show is being produced by none other than Eliana Lopez, wife of San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi.
“We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately,” Lopez told KPIX 5. She said Alonso abruptly resigned from the cast on Friday, given the backlash on the immigration issue.
“Of course she has the right to say whatever she wants. But we’re in the middle of the Mission. Doing what she is doing is against what we believe,” Lopez said.
Alonso received an earful from listeners of Spanish-language radio station KIQI 1010 AM in San Francisco on Friday, after she said in an interview that she supported many of Donnelly’s views on illegal immigration. Several listeners took her to task after she used the term “illegal” to describe undocumented immigrants.
Sure there’s freedom of speech … but it goes both ways. Further more, the advertisement only further proves what we’ve suspected all along — say no to botox. Apparently, as one friend told me, it makes you crazy and supportive of Minutemen douche bags. That it does. That it does.

Yes, freedom of speech goes both ways, but taking the low, uneducated route just make you look stupid, and the position you are defending look, well, indefensible. Your writing style leaves a good bit to be desired and your flawed logic even more. Also, kindly explain to me why “undocumented” does not equal illegal. In my World-view, it most certainly does, just as it does in almost every other country.
As an Arizona born Latino with a Latina (75%) wife, I agree with Maria in this matter, and often with the Tea Party. Not all of us with a proud Mexican heritage have sold out to the hustlers on the liberal side.
It is a shame she lost her SF gig because of her political beliefs, but this is how the liberal universe works – tell the truth and suffer. Perhaps someone with courage, like Clint Eastwood, will find something for this brave and truthful lady. At least “good ol Phil” is still with the Ducks!!! A&E is far more pragmatic ($$$$$) than this bunch of SF cowards.
The way I see it, Mari is the one who regularly demonstrates the brave and truthful lady of courage role. Look how much effort you clowns expend to impune her on a regular basis. I have enjoyed actress Alonso’s contributions to the screen but recognize that she has a right to hang out with Tea Baggo’ s and to be judged by the company she keeps.

John, look up the definition of “progressive.” Means non-violent communist revolution, take from the rich, give to the poor. If you think giving to the poor is without cost to the poor your frame of reference is rather shallow. All of us will, and have gotten our freedoms suppressed by an institution designed to serve us, not the other way around. Tea Party is the mainstream. Is all races fed up about being constantly lied to by both radical left and socialist-conservatives who allow the lobbyists to buy whatever part of government they want. Tea Party represents those willing to put out effort to make their lives successful, not just sitting on their backsides on the dole, begging $$$’s from the government, while buying steak when us working folks can only afford hamburger. If you’ve never been to a communist country you’d not recognize the pitfalls of such a method of social organization, and the elimination of personal gain by effort that that form of government, (toward which we have zoomed quickly), eliminates. Choice becomes a distant memory with that form of government, (Obama’s vision).

It seems that the left constantly reminds everyone to be civil in their discourse, yet refuse that courtesy themselves. Please explain (and the “they are only here for a better life” doesn’t cut it) as to why you fell that our immigration laws need not be enforced, and those in this country illegally should face no penalties? Be aware that the bitter and spiteful comments of your detractors are not only misdirecting, but vacuum time you could be using to investigate the heart of the injustices in Tucson and those who stand to gain by financing those injustices.
