Arpaio is an unabashed carnival barker. And his antics might be amusing if he weren’t also notorious for being not just the toughest but the most corrupt and abusive sheriff in America. As Arizona has become center stage for the debate over illegal immigration and the civil rights of Latinos, Arpaio has sold himself as the symbol of nativist defiance, a modern-day Bull Connor bucking the federal government over immigration policy. As such, he’s become the go-to media prop for conservative politicians, from state legislators to presidential candidates, who want to be seen as immigration hard-liners. “I had Michele Bachmann sitting right there,” says Arpaio, pointing to my chair. “All these presidential guys coming to see me!”
As Arpaio has faced allegations of rampant racial profiling in Arizona, he’s declared war on President Barack Obama, accusing him of watering down federal immigration law to court the Latino vote — while Arpaio himself continues to investigate the legitimacy of Obama’s birth certificate, the favored conspiracy of his far-right constituents. “I’m not going to get into everything else we got about the president,” he brags to a conservative radio interviewer while I’m sitting in his office. “I could write 9 million books.”

While Joe is less than perfect, I take exception with the suggestion that he is corrupt. I wish we had more like him starting here in Pima County.
What I want to know is, how does a fishwrap like the Tucson Weekly end up with two daily links that show up on my Yahoo News front page? Out of six local newlinks on that page, two are always to the Tucson Weekly. Makes me feel like I’m missing a lot of local news.

in the real world. Without Joe’s leadership, the criminal community wouldn’t
have a clue as to right and wrong. In their world it’s whatever you can get away
with, not what’s right or wrong. Look at all the people scraped from the pavement
for not wearing seatbelts. Daddy Joe’s looking out for the law abiding. How’s that

arpaio sent law enforcement to the homes of the Phx New Times executives to arrest them because of “bad” things the paper says about that “tough” sheriff.
You want to support him and his ways? fine, arpaio is and always will be a sad joke.
In a rational world, Arpaio would be humanely incarcerated for the protection of the Community.

Welcome to Arizona, the “Mississippi of the West”. Sheriff Joe routinely acts like the “good ol’ boy” sheriffs we see portrayed all the time in books.TV and the movies. But Joe is bigoted against, not only blacks, but Hispanics, Native Americans and most people of color. He get elected by his so-called “tough-on-crime” rhetoric, although recent crime statistics do not bear that out. Instead , Maricopa County pays millions of dollars each year in settling law suits brought against Sheriff Joe. This year, its over 30 million and climbing. This money can be better served by employing better facilities, more “on-the-street” cops and reducing the tax burden on the residents of Maricopa County.
Until the voters of Maricopa County can see through his braggadocio and hyperbole, the will see him as he really is ; as a clown who wastes tax-payer money

I read the full article on the Rolling Stone website and it was an excellent piece. Arpaio is a classic narcissist with a huge chip on his shoulder. Many are too young to remember how Italians were “the butt of many jokes” for decades–as the Irish were before them, and the Polish were after them. Once their ethnicity is “mainstreamed” it seems they are the first to pick on other ethnic groups—the bullied become the bullies. This 80-yr. old just loves his photo ops and doesn’t care much about anything other than fomenting more hatred. I’m glad we in Pima County are spared of the misery he’s produced up north.
