Senator John McCain’s editorial for the Washington Post begins with the line “President Obama gave a terrific speech Wednesday night”, which is surprising enough, but from there he presents an interesting essay on the state of political discourse in America. Then again, this is coming from the guy who called Obama “that one” during one of the presidential debates, so take it for what it’s worth.

There are too many occasions when we lack that empathy and mutual respect on all sides of our politics, and in the media. But it is not beyond us to do better; to behave more modestly and courteously and respectfully toward one another; to make progress toward the ideal that beckons all humanity: to treat one another as we would wish to be treated.

We are Americans and fellow human beings, and that shared distinction is so much more important than the disputes that invigorate our noisy, rough-and-tumble political culture. That is what I heard the president say on Wednesday evening. I commend and thank him for it.

  1. The Washington Post has completely missed the messages from both President Obama and Senator McCain, continuing to stir the pot and repeat the old, weary and tiresome rehtoric the American people are striving to overcome. Well done Mr. Gibson. You are completely out of touch with the wants and needs of our country. Both you and the Washington Post are an enormous part of the problem. When are you going to man up enough to become part of the solution?

  2. McCain is back to being a RHINO again. Sorry, I just don’t trust anything Obama has to say. It was nothing more than a photo op for him. Where was he during the Midwest floods, or Camp Hood massacre, or laying a wreath on the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at Arlington, or the killing of American citizens by illegal aliens in Arizona? Yes, it would be nice to be civil, but it would also be nice if he was sincere and doing his job instead of playing golf, basketball or going on expensive vacations. What has Obama actually done besides try to ruin our country? He is totally unqualified for this job. This is MHO.
