The Range has heard from a few sources today that Sen. Linda Lopez is planning on resigning her seat in the Arizona Legislature next month.

Lopez, a Democrat who represents District 2, was first elected to the Legislature in 2000.

A few names that are floating around as possible replacements in the district, which includes Tucson’s south side, Green Valley, Sahuarita and Nogales: Legislative District 2 Rep. Andrea Dalessandro, former state lawmaker Tom Prezelski and historic preservation champion Demion Clinco.

  1. Now the Democrats will be under the threat of the Republicans putting up another Ethan Orr. Or, I should say, “The Republicans will be under the threat of another Ethan Orr running as a Republican?”

  2. GCB1: She’s likely resigning because she has a new job that’s likely demanding of her time at Easter Seals (she had already resigned her leadership post), but gosh, we thought it might be best to get an answer from her, which she has not yet provided. But, yet, it’s still news as her resignation will create a minor chain reaction here politically.

  3. Dan Gibson is correct: Sen. Lopez is stepping down because her new job will keep her too busy to continue at the Legislature. I spoke with Sen. Lopez late yesterday afternoon and will have more details about her decision in next week’s print edition.
