This saga has forced me to confront my own political naivety about the reality of racism in Arizona’s politics. I thought—a lot of us thought, it seemed—we’d turned a corner in the Napolitano era; that the electorate that permitted Evan Mecham’s distaste for civil rights to dictate policy had transformed enough to make Arizona an economic contender in 21st century America. But it’s not turning out that way.
Lots of things are killing our state, but enough of those things are embodied in a simple and singular identity: old, scared, stupid white people angry over the degree to which they’ve been deceived by suburban illusions of sustainability.
Well, Luke Knipe, is their shrink wrap racism/nativism under conditions of severe economic depression with states’ rights/libertarianism as the end product or is it the other way around? Or is it all just mindless money-grubbing pandering, as in fundraising?
Ah, Red Star reveals the rub! You can’t very well have a libertarian police state, can you. Ergo the potency of that “fence” metaphor. (You know, the one that’s danged.) Too bad this whole right-wing thing in Arizona has gone, in a generation’s time, from Goldwater to Blackwater. It’s about time someone work on blocking children born to illegal immigrants in the United States from automatically becoming U.S. citizens. I think it will have to be done as a national/constitutional issue though. I think the way it has been applied has been a misinterpretation. The babies should have the same nationality as their parents. No offense to anyone’s home nation meant by that at all!
Right, syllogism, that’ll work. A blood test for each child born as well as a check of the parents’ immigration documents? What about the situation where one parent is undocumented and the other isn’t? What about the situation where the child is born to a person who is undocumented at the time of the child’s birth but later becomes documented? What about an undocumented mother dies in childbirth? What about when an undocumented person under the age of 18 gives birth (because unlawful presence does not accrue for people under 18)? What about when the nationality of the father is unknown? What about when an undocumented woman is raped in the United States by someone who is never caught and their status is unknown, and that woman gets pregnant and has a baby?
I AGREE! NO citinzenship to children of illegal inmigrants, they are illegals too! Please NO more burden for US the TAXPAYERS! I voted democrat in the past elections and I will vote republican if necessary to support this law. NO more free benefits. Iam disable with an illness in my brain and I get 508.00 a month. cannot get government food stamps or SSI due to the navy pension of my husband which he erned it. He works with computers too. But we have 40 thousand in credit cards bills due to 4 years of unemployment since he retired. That has killed us financially. Then congress did not aproved money for us, The disable and elderly. WHY DO WE LET ILLEGAL/UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS RECEIVE UNEMPLOYMENT AND OTHER BENEFITS WHEN WE DON’T LET SOME OF OUR OWN (IE – HOMELESS) DO THE SAME?
I see this will against Illegals & others, so they can hopefully get something, but not realizing the penalty’s as a country that has to have its nose in other countries trying to do what Politicians have wanted. These Politicians want a pat on their own backs and then say they helped control some epidemic like a Migration of other cultures to their own.
It is History repeating now here in Arizona and the problem now. Since most of the people complaining never asked the Veterans just what we did in another country all for the sake of a compliance that some Moronic Politician had wanted to see get the problem resolved by sending our own People there to do the nasty work. The next reality question’s of things like this adding the illegal ridding with their children from another country. “Are you willing to see some children killed?, or, your own by accident with shootouts with police doing this kind of policing , rather then just to Serve & Protect us and let them deal with all o f this the way Politicians have raised hatred amongst people for their own ideas being handled?” So then think of the worst case scenario… “When is the killing for what is happening in this Racial Push going to start?” “Who is going to take the first bullet in ones death in a family be it White, Latino, Black, Chinese or an other?”
I have no need to see what I have seen in other countries fighting for the same thing. The harm is there in the heart and minds of people that came back from fighting a racism in some form of fashion for Politicians like Sarah Palin, John McCain and Russel Pearce not liking something and voicing words to get something from the people since they want a Status among their own.
I fly the red White and Blue proudly as an ex Combat Veteran for the Good Ol U.S.A. and to let you know, “We have opened a Pandora’s box in our society.”

Wow, I too want to help those less fortunate BUT we are going broke (I live in CA, a state with similar issues and concerns). But there are limited resources and when our “own” cannot get the help they need, a vanishing safety net for all, and school systems that cannot teach our own children WE MUST DO SOMETHING! Those here illegally, for the most part do not work and contribute to society, while us Americans work, pay taxes, and help to support the people who are taking away the medical care and educational system from our legal children. School and medical systems are going bankrupt; it is not racism, IT IS SURVIVAL! These are tough times with LIMITED RESOURCES…we must adapt to stay alive, or go the way of past civilizations…we must do what we have to in order to stay solvent and survive!!
I must also add, what we pay to keep criminals in prison is shameful! Take away their gyms, their libraries, conjugal rights, and GUARANTEED MEDICAL. Why are criminals guaranteed medical services while most Americans are not? Make the criminal or their families pay for their coverage with limited services, make them work (without pay) for what they have done, and you will have achieved equality!
I am not from Arizona, but am so proud of the courage your politicians are showing regarding illegal immigrants. If they want to be here, let them enter legally, and follow all of our rules and regulations, like speaking our language, etc. I have a foreign-born daughter-in-law, but she came legally, and follows the rules..

Reads like Mr. Pearce must have flunked junior high school civics, as he ought to know the Fourteen Amendment overruled the Dred Scott v. Sandford decision back in the 1868. Also, the Supreme Court already ruled in Afroyim v. Rusk in the late 1960’s that an individual cannot have their US citizenship deprived of them involuntarily.

When my ancestors, the native americans owned all this land and Europeans arrived to this land, they accepted them. Now in present times those that have come have desired to come because they have dreams that want to accompolish. They have a drive in them that many Americans don’t have… the drive is to accompolish there goals and support their families. When you say that they come here and take jobs, that is not true at all. They are working for little pay, long hours and very hard labor jobs neither you and I would like to do for $8/ hr. Everywhere you look, an immigrant has left their mark, their proof of being a hard worker. The next time you eat a salad with fresh picked veggies, think about picking those vegetables all by yourself, under the hot blazing sun when it is 100 degrees outside and working 10 hr days and getting dehydrated. How about where you work? Look at the building you work in and imagine mixing concrete and laying bricks to make that structure while it is 30 degrees outside or 100 degrees during the summer. Or maybe you work in an office that hires an outside crew to clean the office, do you appreciate the clean windows, bathrooms, freshly vacuumed rugs and dust free workplace? Maybe it is that new road downtown that was built during the wee hours of the night and early morning so that the traffic issues in the area would be resolved. These people work hard and because they dont have papers, they cant recieve tax credits such as the EITC credits, I know this for a fact. And if your Hispanic and think that the law in AZ is okay, you apparently have and identity issue and have been either brainwashed or accept racism. The key is to fix the Immigration system, help those that are here get there papers and create a system that will allow people to come to this country legally. Hey NO ILLEGALS ALLOWED apparently you have some issues or maybe someone teased you about being hispanic when you were younger, whatever it is find out. This country needs people that are not ashamed of where the come from. I dont know if your Mexican or Latin American, but my family that has served this country didn’t let others take away their pride for being hispanic.
