The owner of the Sausage Shop Meat Market at 1015 W. Prince Road just faxed me his menu, and I am experiencing conflicting emotions.
I am thrilled to know there’s a family-owned place that sells more than 100 different sausages and 53 sandwiches, but how did this place escape my notice until now, even though it’s been open since 1984?
Hmmmm, maybe it’s because some people have been keeping secrets to hoard this little gem all for themselves! From one online review:
This little place has been doing business quietly in the corner of the Blue Haven Pools shopping center just West of Lowery’s hardware for many years. I found it a couple of years ago. I kept it a secret till now. YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED!
For shame!
Owner Kent Koecheler makes everything from Hungarian kolbaz to Cajun boudan, and it doesn’t stop anywhere near there. He also dry cures beef; custom cuts steaks; makes three types of bacon—and if it’s made out of meat there’s a good chance he can either provide it or point you to who does. He’s especially proud of his brat that includes everything that comes with a hot dog at a Chicago Cubs game, including the beer. I’m really proud of him for that, too.
And then there are the prices. Most sandwiches are $6, and some are only $5. From what I’ve read, the place is a madhouse between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., but you can also call your order in, and they’ll have it ready for you when you get there. Call 888-1701 for more information.

Adam,
The Sausage Shop swas a staf pick for BOT last year or the year before.
(I know I wroter about it.) It’s a fab place. The Italian sausage is as good as it gets in these parts and the pepper bacon…..ahhhhh!
There’s a line out the door at lunch time and on Saturday you’ll have a bit of a wait to get your meat products.
The guys also donated hot dogs for the last three years for BroFest. We love them.
It is true, it was a staff pick six years ago! The jalapeno bacon sounds delicious and I can’t wait to cook up some gumbo using their Cajun sausages. As of today I learned that I know nothing of sausages, but I plan on embarking on an education by shopping at the Sausage Shop and treating friends to meals they never dreamed of.
RUDEST STAFF IN TUCSON-HUNTER HATERS! I had some game processed there and was shorted. I called and spoke to Kent who was rude and adimate that I was wrong. A 1/2 hr later he called to say he shorted me a bag and not even an apology. I went back to pick up the bag and was greeted by the rudest trashiest lady at the counter. She threw the bag on the counter. Not wanting to cause a scene. I politely told her quietly that Kent was rude the night before, it would have been nice if he would have checked when I called. She said she knew and it was ” not a good idea to question Kent’s paperwork”. She also told me hunters are rude and their business is retail not the hunters. I told her I have also been there several times to purchase and her comment was “I don’t know you.” I have NEVER NEVER seen such poor customer service- it was ridiculous. It was their mistake and because I called them on it they found the need to be defensive and rude. I will never shop there again and tell my friends that even thought they have good product it is not worth their beligerant attitudes. How dare you people treat customers this way- not good business practice.
The food was great, the selection incredible, the people very friendly…if you have not been there yet..you are missing out..Packers fans beware..they like to give you a hard time..minnesota folk run the place..all are welcome..but leave your cell phone outside or turn it off and hide it…no phones inside policy ….it is hard to choose the right sandwich….but the truth is they are all the right sandwich..so enjoy
Just a brief comment or two on how great this place is. Hard to know why it was a “hidden gem” from the Tucson Weekly. I called recently to see if they handled grass-fed beef. To the person who reported lack of courtesy–TRY THIS. The person I spoke to reported they did not have GFB, BUT was NICE beyond necessity to give me names of places where I might find it–St. Philip’s Market on weekends and Trader Joe’s. No lack of courtesy there!!!!! Truly their sandwiches are superb and the counter meats are terrific. They know their stuff!!!!
