I thought the GOP’s determination to make a campaign issue about contraception was pretty weird in itself, but it took a truly reprehensible turn when Rush Limbaugh suggested that a college student was a “slut” because she testified before Congress about the importance of covering contraception, especially for women who might need it for reasons that had nothing to do with birth control.
The woman, Sandra Fluke, issued a statement in response to Rush’s declaration that she was a slut:
I thank the thousands of women and men, including members of Congress, Georgetown University students and faculty, and total strangers of all political stripes across the country who have offered kind words and support following recent egregious personal attacks.
We are fortunate to live in a democracy where everyone is entitled to their own opinions regarding legitimate policy differences. Unfortunately, numerous commentators have gone far beyond the acceptable bounds of civil discourse.
No woman deserves to be disrespected in this manner. This language is an attack on all women, and has been used throughout history to silence our voices.
The millions of American women who have and will continue to speak out in support of women’s health care and access to contraception prove that we will not be silenced.
Rush responded with his demand that women tape themselves having sex and post the videos online so others could watch them.
In case you want to hear Rush’s original comments on Fluke’s testimony.

Sick! only a coward like Limbaugh would take on a female college student who was very brave. he is a vile and apparently perverted in his mind and thoughts. what a hateful man. he should be ashamed but I am sure he way beyond ever having felt shame. truly a sociopath with a microphone who knows hate and fear sell well. Go Away Rush…and stay away.
My gawd, is this man a complete, raging idiot? What about the responsible, low-income woman, who takes oral contaceptives provided by a State Medicaid program to avoid pregnancy and the cost of that pregnancy for which Medicaid would also pay?
Lighten up people and get a sense of humor! It’s no wonder you liberals are so hateful, you have thin skin and can’t take a joke!
This girl is probably not a slut, but for some reason she thinks she’s the voice of all womanhood, and that it’s not a woman’s responsibility to prevent unwanted pregnency. Besides, contraception is already provided by the government in the form of free condoms at any health clinic.
So the girl’s “probably not a slut”, eh Cody? Gee, I’m sure she’ll sleep so much better at night knowing some anonymous online douchebag holds such enlightened opinions.
By the way, unless the condoms offered are the vaginal type, I doubt any woman would be skipping down to pick them up as it’s a man’s job to cover his penis before dipping it into a partner, not a woman’s. But then, it’s fairly obvious you haven’t had much experience with sexual ethics, much less sex. With the level of knowledge and sensitivity displayed in your post above, you couldn’t get laid in a Tijuana cathouse with a fistful of cash and an industrial drum of spanish fly.
Everyone, by now, should realize that these radio personalities are only interested in ratings. Their job is to get people riled up. There should, therefore, be a disclaimer before each show which says, “For entertainment purposes only.” Anyone who believes a word these entertainers say are being manipulated for monetary gain.
Quite the little cottage industry Rush Limbaugh has built, huh Jim Nintzel…
I can just imagine Rush posting a video of HIM having sex, but the thought of a whale having sex out of the water staggers my imagination.
THIS is tongue in cheek people. I personally don’t listen to Rush anymore (haven’t for years) but haven’t your guys ever heard of sarcasm….Bill Maher used to do it years ago when he was funny.
The difference is that Bill Maher is funny.
Listen folks…both sides…Radio Talk shows are designed to inflame people, get them angry or emotional, get people talking, calling, writing…to increase advertisement sales. ADVERTISEMENT SALES! That’s what it’s all about. I know, these guys can really piss ya off…but it’s psychology. It’s all designed to get under your skin. Just don’t let it. And yes, I’m a republican but I’m an American first and Limbaugh is an idiot.
Why does everyone think it is ok for the government to be in everyones business? There is nothing funny about the government poking their nose in where it does not belong and it does not make a person an idiot no matter who they are just because they voice their opinion. If you want the government telling you what to do, how to do and when to do you need to pack your bags and go to one of the other countries that do that. Myself I like going where I want, when I want and how I want………Now that is what I think so I guess I am an idiot to some but others will know what I’m talking about.
I’d like to preface my question by saying that I don’t believe it is ever okay to call someone a slut. I believe that Rush Limbaugh’s approach is wrong, and has hurt the viewpoint he represented by his unacceptable behavior.
That being said, the article above talks about contraceptives that have nothing to do with birth control. Could someone enlighten me as to the other uses, or reasons, I guess for contraceptives? My view about government financed contraceptives is that if the sole reason is for birth control, doesn’t the couple having sex have the option of not potentially impregnating the lady during sex? Or the use of condoms? If the only reason for gov’t paid contraceptives is to facilitate recreational sex, then does it not stand to reason the government should subsidize, if not finance other recreational activities such as golf, videogames, or parasailing? Perhaps my logic is wrong, and if it is, than would someone be so kind as to show me where I went astray. Thank you.
But is it not true that this woman said that the only times she has sex it is for money? And if thats true, she is a prostitute?!
@ Jeff Srun – Using your logic on recreational sex:
As gonad, excuse me, testicle cancer is rarely deadly and that nuts, excuse me, testicles are primarily for reproductive or recreational purposes I suggest that in the future the only man that can have his medical insurance pay for testicle cancer treatment is if his life is in immediate danger or if he will be having a child soon thereafter and then he must report to the government that indeed the child was born and if no other kids are planned you are no longer eligible for any treatments. If you do not meet theses requirements and you can live without them, your insurance will just let them rot.
And if anything ever happens to your penis that you can live with, tough luck unless your wife is of child bearing age and is actively trying to have a child and you agree to certify those intentions to have one. If you don’t all monies spent to treat your peepee must be returned to the government. If you aren’t having kids and its all for recreational purposes tough luck for little jeffy because I shouldn’t have to subsidize you being a slut and all.
Finally, sorry gay men as you can’t biologically have children it doesn’t matter if you have penis or gonad issues, if you can live with it – no treatment.
By the way Jeff, contraceptives are used for far more than just birth control. But thank you for giving me an argument to tear apart.

you know what to do when you get there…
You folks crack me up. This gal is 30 years old and goes to a private (very expensive) Catholic university. She was aware of the policy before she enrolled. Now she wants the university to change it’s policy to suit her? If she wants contraceptives so bad, she can get them from Planned Parenthood for free. I have yet to have those studies put forward that show contraceptives stop all those other ailments that are claimed. I’d like her to give me free legal services after she gets her law license.
Yeah Mike, how dare a member of a free society agitate to change ignorant, repressive policies within its social structure? That would be like living in the USA pre 9/11, and god knows we can’t have THAT anymore or the terrorists win!
Listen mother fletcher; she chose the school not the other way around….she is just doing what obanga teaches….IRRESPONSIBILITY…….
If the Catholic Church doesn’t want government standing up equity in women’s health we should stop their tax exempt status.
@ sangria
Your disagreement with my view is noted. You might note that really, my post makes it very clear that I was ignorant about the other use of contraceptives when I posted. Having a better understanding of that, I can see why people would want that. I would also like to note that your post is slightly difficult to read, due to a lack of punctuation. That aside, I believe that the one view I expressed in my earlier post was misunderstood. I was trying to say that:
1) I did not know other uses for contraceptives other than preventing unwanted pregnancy, and was asking for answers.
2) If the people in favor of the government funding contraceptives had only wanted them to prevent unwanted pregnancies, it seems that they had cheaper (as in free) alternatives for that.
You’ll note I didn’t mention testicular cancer at all. I could be wrong, but it seems like your “ripping an argument apart” mostly consisted of arguing against things I was not saying.
“Finally, sorry gay men as you can’t biologically have children it doesn’t matter if you have penis or gonad issues, if you can live with it – no treatment.”
Are there contraceptives for men? All i was talking about was birth control, and you turned it into health insurance for genitals regarding people who weren’t having children and people who can’t have children. I’m not really looking for an argument, but answers to questions.
Jeff, you are the one that said “well she doesn’t HAVE to have sex” so why should it be paid for (as opposed to a free alternative). I responded in turn as to what also shouldn’t be paid for under that case as well (you don’t HAVE to have sex you know).
The entire debate is over if employers can dictate what is covered based on religous beliefs. So she shouldn’t have sex because her employer doesn’t cover contraceptives but under that same plan you can have sex (even if you aren’t having kids) because your sexual organs are covered under health insurance. Double standard?
What about women who have been advised not to get pregnant? I don’t think you or the catholic church should get to decide on matters that so gravely affect women’s health – that is what doctors are for.
Seriously though if you are so unaware of women’s health and what is used to treat women (and somehow missed the thousands of big pharm commercials that advertise its uses) WHY are you commenting on this to begin with?
So my punctuation didn’t set well with you what does that have to do with anything?
Also there is a little engine called google that can help you with “answers.”
Actually Bob, the school did accept Ms. Fluke since she had to apply, so there goes the only logical leg your pitiful rant had to stand on. And kindly explain how planning to avoid the medical condition of pregnancy until one is ready for it is in any way irresponsible? I for one am quite happy to subsidize that, regardless of how much sex is involved-it’s not my business any more than yours. Your position is the equivalent of me saying I shouldn’t be forced to pay for your colonoscopy because you might have eaten too much red meat.
Just the fact that she chose to go to a catholic institution knowing how the institution and the church feels towards this doctrine shows that she wanted them to bend to one persons beliefs. An irresponsible attitude being taught in obongo university…..
That’s funny Bob. Which Catholic church are you talking about? The one that disapproved of condoms altogether or the one that approves them for use by gay prostitutes? The one with the old liturgy or the one with the new liturgy? The church with the old doctrine of “no salvation outside the Church” or the one that offers the hope of salvation to anyone?
They can change bob, they can and do, even progressing at times. The past is not an excuse for the present.
sangria,I went to 12 years of catholic school and was an alter boy to boot. The old liturgy of the mass was latin and the new liturgy was in english but said the same thing. The old doctrine was against ANY condoms and I don’t know of ANY other doctrine in favor of ANY gay prostitutes. As far as I know they still teach that there is no salvation outside the church but they do offer salvation to anyone wishing to be part of the church. Now I know that Popes and priests used to be allowed to marry at one time but that changed hundreds of years ago….things change VERY slow in the Catholic church so why do people think that they can change in two weeks because of some butana in a catholic law school????
So just because you’re a brainwashed convert from the git-go and thus resistant to change doesn’t mean that everybody else shares your rectitude, Bob. And Ms. Fluke wasn’t asking anyone to bend to her beliefs, merely to be treated as a human being with the right to make their own moral/medical decisions. This is in no way irresponsible and the fact that you and the Church feel that it is only serves to demonstrate why the policies must be changed.
If you honestly feel contraception is evil, then don’t use it. And if you continue to object to those who would change your religion’s medieval attitudes toward sexual freedom, then you’d better grow some extra skin. And btw, if altar boys could get pregnant, the policies would have changed several generations ago, if only to protect priests.
Ah,mother fletcher your starting to sound like a commie…..now you want me to disavow my religion….yes I realize that not everyone feels this way and if she,the butana can make her own moral decisions so can I…..And I have never used contraception.Oh and by the way, being an ex leo I have grown plenty of skin over the years…and you lowered yourself making the last crack about alter boys…at least the commies in SE asia had the balls to try to fight against us……
Ex-law enforcement or not, you wouldn’t know a commie from a hole in the ground, Bob. And nobody’s asking you to disavow your religion, just butt out of the lives of others who don’t share your interpretation, rather like the church needs to butt out of the private lives of its adherents. See, commies are the ones who want to control things for everybody else, Bob; freedom-lovers know enough to mind their own business. But I suppose that’s why you were a cop-you obviously love screwing with people’s lives and couldn’t tell the difference in the first place.
Also, the only ones lowered in the altar boy scandals were the pedophile priests and those like yourself who defended their right to rape children. If only the kids involved had had the balls to blow away their abusers, but they were too deeply brainwashed (“You’ll go to hell if you tell, Bobby”) to man up and do the job you and the rest of the brainwashed cops and prosecutors should have done years ago if you truly believed in justice.
Mother Fletcher, its funny you should mention that because I was in a hole in the ground when the commies were shooting in our direction but getting back to your point, yes I guess I did enjoy when I had a progressive like yourself on a string.I always tried to talk your type to change your minds but there was never enough grey matter……
You’re right, you certainly lack the brainpower to convince anybody to change their mind, much less change your own; congratulations on being honest enough to admit that, as well as to being a control freak. Too bad you weren’t honest enough to recognize the criminals in your church and put them on a string, too.
To respond to Jeff Srun’s original post/question: Please listen to or read Fluke’s testimony where she explains uses for BCPs other than for contraception. This, by the way, was the heart of her message–not to suggest that she wanted to be paid to have sex. Meanwhile, BCPs are prescribed to treat conditions like ovarian cysts. Also, BCPs with low-dose estrogen/hormone levels are regularly prescribed to treat acne. Ask any dermatologist or parent of a teenager with skin issues, and imagine these parents’ outrage at Limbaugh’s comments when now, because of this “entertainer,” their children have to fear being called a slut or prostitute for taking prescribed/effective medication. Some may think Limbaugh’s merely a buffoon who should be dismissed without thought; however, his audience is wide and his minions equally ignorant.
for once I agree with Rush
