Kathryn Ferguson stands in one of her favorite haunts in the Tumacacori mountains, near the Arizona-Mexico line. As a border activist and volunteer with the Samaritans, the Tucson native hiked dangerous desert trails for 13 years, putting out water and food for migrants at risk. She wrote about her experiences in two award-winning books, The Haunting of the Mexican Border: A Woman’s Journey and Crossing with the Virgin: Stories from the Migrant Trail, co-authored with Norma A. Price and Ted Park. Also a filmmaker, a dancer and a choreographer, with her own belly-dance troupe and studio, Xanadu, Ferguson died of cancer Sunday night at Peppi’s House hospice in her hometown, after a short illness. She was in her late 60s.

  1. Wow Mr. Again, you’ve proved to Kathryn who the boss is. You really know how to show love and respect to people who have recently passed away. The members of your church would be so proud of your Christian actions. I wish that I was a more respectful and religious man such as you are.

  2. Sad, sad news. I met Kathryn Ferguson for the first time at the Tucson Herpetological Society booth at the Tucson Festival of Books last month. She autographed a copy of The Haunting of the Mexican Border for me. This is a major loss for everyone who loves La Frontera.

  3. It’s never against the law (state, federal, international) to provide humanitarian aide.

    You’ll be missed Kathy.

  4. Hey, Denise Allen:

Your whole post is one diatribe of ignorance and profound disrespect. You’re a phony and a hypocrite. You’re also full of shit.

  5. The disrespect toward Kathryn Ferguson exhibited by some of these comments is disgusting. She is a wonderful author who contributed greatly to humanity.

  6. What, Again: I could post just as many headlines about white male US citizens doing the exact same things. People do bad things no matter what country they’re from. They also do great, wonderful things. Kathryn’s work wasn’t about hate, which is all I’m getting from your messages. I choose her message over yours every time.

  7. Hey Wrong, Again:

You must feel like a tennis ball.

Because you’re getting served left and right.

It’s gotta hurt to be wrong all the time.

  8. Very sad news. RIP Kathryn. You will be missed.
Thanks for coming to our concerts and for having so much compassion.

  9. Why is it that you feel the need to shit on everything Wrong, Again?

You are, without any doubt, the most pathetic troll to ever infect the TW site. The hate and bullshit that lurks inside of you is off the charts.

You don’t even have the common decency to show respect for those who can’t defend themselves, such as the deceased.

You probably enjoy shitting all over disabled people also.

  10. Pay no attention to the trolls. They, like Trump, are traitors. They’re most likely being paid by Russia.

  11. I didn’t meet Kathryn, But from these posts. she was a great Human being. Good, Loving. and Caring people are what we need more of. RIP Kathryn Ferguson

  12. Truly a woman of integrity, Kathryn’s loss came unexpectedly. Not only Tucson but all of Southern Arizona is in tears.

  13. My dear, dear friend, Kathryn, I can’t believe you are gone! You gave so much of yourself to so many! The day you walked into my classroom to introduce yourself as my new substitute, I knew we would ALWAYS BE GREAT FRIENDS! My heart is so broken, as are all of her family-her loving, caring husband and beautiful spirited sister as well as her many friends! She was a true hero to so many, her devotion to our friends walking the desert was shear love of humanity itself! Oh my dearest Kathryn whatever are we going to do without you?!? YOu will forever be our Bass Ass Warrior Woman! Protect all our immigrants in the desert !!!!

  14. Kathryn was my dance instructor for 4 years. She was a beautiful person inside and out. We didn’t agree on some things but She believed in what she did. She helped young women feel confident about themselves through dance. She was fun to be with and had stories to tell. She was a great film producer and a top advocate for humanity. She will be greatly missed in the belly dance community amongst other areas she participated in. I’m proud to have known a women of her stature and call her friend.

  15. Beloved Kathryn; the world is a lesser place without you. You are free to dance on the mountain tops and the heavens are rejoicing to have the beauty of you among it’s stars. You were my role model, hero and friend. I will so miss those great conversations with your incredible mind and shining soul. You were a force for love and good, with compassion for all you encountered. You could never have been here long enough for me, but I am so honored that we walked some of this journey together. Thank you, Kathryn, my friend. Journey on and fly free. With so much love, Trudy Yaklich

  16. Kathryn was worthy of the utmost respect. She helped humanity. And Mr. Again and Denise Allen…what have you done lately to make the world a better place???? Typing hate on the internet is not exactly honorable.
