Congressman Raul Grijalva had a great visit to the Colbert Nation last night.

Loved Colbert’s description of Congressional District 7 as “hotter than the devil’s balls.”

Getting hassled by The Man Mild-mannered reporter

  1. It’s always surprising how odd some interviewee reactions to Colbert are. Do handlers not do their homework? Do they not “get” Colbert? Given the usual fallout, why do they continue to appear?

  2. Why would half of American voters vote for Bush? Don’t they get the Bushit?
NO, NO THEY DON’T John Banks, they do not get it.

  3. That the politicans don’t get the subtleties of the show. They’re somehow not willing to believe the entire show is comedy, that it’s all a farce.

We were somehow not willing to believe the Bush Admin was a show, all a farce. We didn’t get the subtleties of the deceit. You think everyone likes Colbert? The same folk I live, and work with, that voted for Mr. Bush dislike Colbert. They don’t get the show. It’s not funny to them. They don’t want to hear about it or have a chat with me about it. The show is “Stupid”, probably the most common retort.

The guests go on the show because they think they can either outwit or play it straight and they’ll be cool. And “cool” is what they aspire to as they appear on the “coolest” comedy show on TV.

From watching the show, my conclusion is the half the politicians don’t get the show. Sorry, they don’t. Some sort of disbelief that they could be hoodwinked by a lefty satirical news comedy program.

You can fool HALF the people out there! Politicos too, and that’s the tie to W.

  4. Now, the subtlety of the show is not that Colbert is pretending to be this Righty. That’s obvious.

Colbert’s lighthearted charm is very convincing in his conservative caricature and you find yourself momentarily disarmed. The subtle part is that, over all, his performance paints a clearly negative picture of the flag-toting, god-n-country types. Seems the conservative politicos don’t realize their appearance on the show (aside from being humiliated by hilarious editing) will be lumped into the the cumulative effect of Colbert’s character over time. And over time he portrays conservative types and Republicans in an unflattering manner. Sure, sure, we’re all “smart”, we get it, he’s over the top. But are you sure you’re not being slowly suckered by Colbert’s performance? Find yourself believing half the country is just like him? Just a little? Poquito?

    That’s why the show rocks!
