Media Watch dude John Schuster says changes are afoot at KCUB AM 1290, aka The Source. (Full dlsclosure: John does UA pregame and postgame shows on KCUB.)
1290 AM pulled the plug on Mike Rapp and Betsy Bruce this morning. Both are Tucson radio veterans: Rapp has worked in the market since his collegiate days with KUAT dating back to 1979. He’s probably best known for his days as part of the Mike and Tyler morning show tandem at KLPX in the ’90s. He also teamed with Tim Tyler at Rock 107.5 FM, also owned by Citadel, but when Citadel tried Opie and Anthony, they repositioned the pair. Tyler is working the morning shift now as Opie and Anthony have been relegated to 3 a.m., and Rapp moved to the morning show on 1290.
Betsy Bruce was part of the Mojo and Betsy morning show team that had its strongest run in the late ’90s and early 2000s. She has been in this market for well over a decade as well.
1290 is moving Glenn Beck to mornings. They’ll also run him in the afternoon slot until further notice.
This article appears in Sep 6-12, 2007.

Pretty wild considering just last month as Schuster reported, managers there said the show would continue with Rapp.
It’s understandable they would move Glenn Beck up to a morning drive slot to fill the void: the forthcoming Beck is becoming a powerhouse, and offers a saner alternative to the smug-yet-combative Bill O’Reilly. However, does this leave Jim Parisi at KNST as the only local morning AM news show?
Didn’t Rapp used to rap on KNST, too?
Glenn Beck = sane? Sure, if you’re comparing him to Bill O’Reilly. But if you compare him to an actual sane man, Beck is a raving lunatic.
That’s exactly what I’m comparing him to: Bill O’Reilly.
I never said how he fits in the grand scale of “being sane” (which differs among everyone on the political spectrum).
Beck is much more agreeable or approachable with his guests that have opposing views compared to anything O’Reilly does. O’Reilly shouts down his guests yet smugly talks to his audience like he is always correct.
OK, so, moving beyond the press release: Why? How about calling somebody (like Mike Rapp for starters) and asking? And if nobody is willing to talk, then saying so in the report?
James: That’ll all be in this week’s very exciting Media Watch column. Look for it with anticipation!
Some say that blogs are free flowing — allow the reader in with a sort of look at your reporter’s notebook. I figure this breaking story is in line with that.

Hey, speaking of radio, does anyone know why that woman at KNST (Victoria Bell?) always says their call letters as “K, N, S, …(pause)…T”?
It’s always been bugging me. I need a special edition of the Very Exciting Media Watch Column to answer that.
