The latest candidate to launch a presidential campaign as part of Project White House: Jim Anderson, the owner of the Meet Rack bar and grill.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the loquacious Anderson: Back in the 1980s, he was a regular candidate for mayor in Tucson while he was running one of Tucson’s most unusual taverns, Someplace Else. (When I asked him this summer why he wasn’t running this year–since he would have had the Democratic field all to himself–he said he didn’t know there was an election coming up. Of course, given the turnout on Election Day, it appears he was not alone …)

Anderson, who was briefly profiled in our recent survey of dive bars in Tucson, didn’t take much convincing. I dropped by the Meet Rack and explained what Project White House was all about. His response: “I’m in.”

Also, Project White House has a new Web page up. Thanks to Dave Maass and Sean Fitzpatrick for their help.

Remember, you have until noon on Monday to launch your own presidential campaign!

  1. It’s tooo hard: the new web page says folks have until midnight tonight (Dec 7) and the Nintzel TW blog post says folks have until noon Monday to run for President

  2. We’ve extended the deadline, but our crack Web staff has not yet managed to update the Web page. Sorry! You do have until noon on Monday. Run, Red Star, Run!

  3. Ah, Someplace Else, what fond memories. Like the time I went there with my girlfreinds and one of them asked for a glass of water because she had the hiccups and the bartender threw a glass of water in her face. Or the time another friend got punched out just because he sat down. And then there was the time I ….okay we won’t go there.
If anyone wants to see candidate Anderson, he takes a morning stroll up Stone Avenue every morning around 7:00 a.m. – near Drachman, heading north. Look for a shiny head and a snow white goatee.

  4. You’re allowed to name a running mate if you want, but most candidates traditionally wait until after they’ve sewn up the nomination to take that step.

  5. Are you sure that’s Y’Shua Lord of Hosts? The link says Dan Perfidio died. But Dan Perfidio was the Great Satan at Large. Y’Shua 666 Israel, on the other hand, was Stephen Paul Gossman.

You’re mixing up your Satanic kooks with public-access cable shows! Or maybe I am mixing them up. Not sure.

  6. Sam, I checked out my Satanic-kooks-with-public-access-shows trading-card set and you’re absolutely right! The dead one was Great Satan at Large, Not Y’SLOH666I. Rumors of his death are greatly exaggerated.

  7. You know what would make Project White House that much better? If the different candidates were pitted against each other! They should make attack ads mocking each other’s candidacies!

The attack ads might look something like this

  8. By the way, I would love to get some of those Satanic kooks-with-cable-access-shows trading cards. They’re made by (Blow Their) Topps right?

I actually do have the Topps trading cards from Operation Enduring Freedom. My favorite card is “Yassir Arafat donating blood.”

Anyway, I look forward to hearing more about your plans for Project White House. I think it would be cool if Tim Gunn were involved somehow. Maybe the presidential candidates should be forced to write their stump speeches on foliage, or to speak in the style of 1970s cultural icons — you know, to prove their creativity.

  9. Just a note for everybody: you need to be a registered Republican or Democrat to run. Greens, Independents, and others are ineligble because those parties are not recognized at a state-wide level. More: www recorder.pima.gov/images/pr_12_07_07.pdf

While the Libertarian Party is a recognized party on all levels in AZ, it is holding a completely different primary system detailed here: http://www.lp.org/media/article_540.shtml

The system may well mean Ron Paul cannot jump over to the LP nomination if he does not win the GOP’s, which may have been a safeguard the party put in for this new primary system.

I do hope you guys do this again 10 years from now when it wouldn’t be elections fraud for me to run. (Otherwise you would have seen me at the office tomorrow morning)

In any event, let the games begin!

  10. Correction: You do not have to be a registered Democrat or Republican to run, but you do have to decide whether you want to be on the Republican or Democratic ballot. The form allows for candidates who are not members of the political party to check a box indicating that they are not a member of the party whose nomination they seek.

You do, however, have to be a registered Democrat or Republican to vote in the presidential primary.

  11. “but you do have to decide whether you want to be on the Republican or Democratic ballot.”

My apologies for the confusion. Please delete my erroneous post.
