Politico reports today that Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun-regulation organization formed earlier this year, has raised $11 million:
Former Rep. Gabby Giffords’ gun control group has raised a staggering $11 million over the past four months.
Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly formed Americans for Responsible Solutions following the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting to push for stronger gun laws.
Since then, they’ve built a membership of nearly 366,000 and received donations from roughly 53,500 donors, according to information provided to POLITICO.
It’s unclear who the donors are, or whether the bulk of the fundraising haul comes from mega donors, the way Mayor Mike Bloomberg aids his anti-gun effort. Americans for Responsible Solutions did not respond to requests about who gave contributions to the group.

Background checks are only as useful as the information in its database–Hence, for any such registering of guns and background checks to be useful, are you willing to give up all your expectations of privacy regarding your medical and mental health history to the US government to peruse?
If you ever had anti-depressant medicine, even for just after a major operation, or received mental health counseling because you were blue or dealing with grief, that could be the basis of some pencil pusher bureaucrat in government to determine by a strict set of rules that you cannot own a firearm. That’s infringement without due process. The Founding Fathers would call it tyranny.
Oh, and maybe the government needs more information to add your background check to make such decisions! SUCH AS…. Failure to pay taxes on time, misdemeanors like traffic tickets, political affiliation that the Southern Poverty Law Center and Harry Reid deem radical and dangerous–the possibilities are endless for the government to take as much personal information about you, and decide if you can own a firearm. That’s infringement without due process. That’s Tyranny.
Also, doesn’t it bother you in the least bit that government is not as conversely accommodating being transparent as it demands us to be? After all, if the Government has nothing to hide, what is it afraid of, hmmmm?
A bombing occurs, we blame the bomber. A drunk driver kills someone we blame the driver, We have a shooting, we blame the firearm?? LOGIC??? By all rights, pressure cookers, should undergo a background check to purchase, and the feds keep a record of use.
Has anyone looked into the dangerous UN treaty on firearms. This treaty is to be signed by the president making firearm ownership illegal and/ or very restrictive. Essentially a loophole to go around the Second Amendment. This is our president agreeing to other nations demands.
Answer me this – when was the last time you have seen the government willingly give up power? Why do so many people want to restrict someone’s Constitutional Rights? I have yet to see someone say we should limit violence in movies or in video games. Why not? Protected speech. Just because you do not value a right, does not give you the authority to take it away from someone else who does value it.
Hopefully they will do the right thing and declare this one their taxes, unless Kelly uses it for his election bid.
Wow! It looks like Mark Kelly will be living large.
Kelly can buy lots of AR-15s now.
We have gun control. We need gun control enforcement. The police don’t want to do their job the crimes will bring in money. Gun enforcement doesn’t make them money so getting rid of guns is their answer. WRONG!!!!
@ Deal Breaker Nice conspiracy theories. Listening to much Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh lately? Maybe reading the well-respected World News Daily?
All that is being talked about is simple background checks. Have you looked at the bill or attended any of John McCain’s Town Hall meetings?
Here’s how it works: You want to buy a gun. The dealer calls a central phone number that keeps a data base of the names of convicted felons or those ADJUDICATED BY THE COURTS to have a mental illness (not someone who has been privately been treated for depression by a physician, for example). It takes about five minutes. If your name is not on the list, the sale goes through. The seller THEN DESTROYS THE APPLICATION FOR THE FIREARM WITH YOUR NAME ON IT.
There is never an “ask” of the type of weapon you are buying. And even though there is ALREADY a law in existence prohibiting the formation of a national gun registry, the legislation that was proposed (and will be introduced again) includes specifically, language prohibiting the formation of a gun registry. Anyone promulgating and spreading information to the contrary of these FACTS is blatantly lying.
TO ANYONE – Look it up (ie read the bill or a summary thereof-maybe try Joe Manchin’s (D), Pat Toomey’s (R) or the senate websites) and try to proof me wrong based on the facts and not on your “feelings” or conspiracy theories about the big, bad government or communist Obama. And don’t use the disgraced Politifact. They wouldn’t know a fact as much as WND would.
PS Love your rant about the UN, Deal Breaker. It was very coherent. *note sarcasm* Treaties, by the way, must be passed by the Senate with a super-majority vote. But it’s okay. I know you want to blame everything on Obama, so keep up the good work.
As for the rest of you morons, I hope you really aren’t as stupid as you seem – to think that the money that is raised for this organization goes into Giffords’ or Kelly’s personal bank accounts. It would be against the law as Americans for Responsible Solutions is registered as a political action committee. Again, ignorance should not be spread. It is a plague on society. JMHO.
Bricks are generally used by people in construction of some sort. Baseball bats are made to be used to hit baseballs. Pressure cookers usually are put to use on stove tops in preparation of meals. They share more in common with frying pans than with firearms. Motor vehicles mainly serve to haul people, sometimes with their possessions, pets, etc., from place to place. They all can and have been used for murderous purposes. Guns are made for the purpose of killing; some guns seem quite obviously to be intended for killing people. When a gun is used to commit homicide the gun isn’t being put to a use foreign to the purpose for which it was manufactured. So could we all please stop pretending that a Mauser is no more intended for manslaughter than is a Mercedes? Or that a Smith and Wesson is no more inherently dangerous than a Subaru? Or that the right to possess a Glock should involve no more restriction than the right to own a glockenspiel? If I need to register a CRV, why not an AR-15? Whether it’s a Sten or a Bren, a gun is a gun, and no 6 year old male child has any illusions about the nature of guns, even if he may not yet fully grasp the permanence of death.
I sure hope they can get something done w/all that money.
People are just so stupid when it come to guns. You have to register your car pay for insurance, license it each year. Why not guns?
Driving a car is a privilege owning and bearing arms is a right. Try studying the BILL OF RIGHTS before you so willingly give them away. God given rights cannot be taken away from you, you must “give” them up. The federal government does not have the authority to infringe in any way on the rights guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment. Study the bill of RIGHTS. Educate yourself. Because you do not value your rights don’t try to give mine away.
We have long know that “A fool and his money are soon parted.” Now the “fools” are giving their money to those who would deny others the fundamental right to own a gun.
Perhaps there is a bright side to this; there is now less money from these “fools” for other crazy liberal crusades.
I met Gabby before she was shot. As a centrist, I rarely agree with politicians on either side of the fence, but I thought Gifford’s was one of the ‘good ones’. Unfortunately, that has changed and now she’s just another one of the many irrational politicians. Sad really. She could have done a lot of
great things for this country. Now she’s just a tool for nut jobs like Feinstine to push their communist nanny state agenda.
As for those of you who think we should register guns like cars and license people, I would like to point out that since cars kill 2-3 times as many people as guns, registration and licensing doesn’t work there either.
